contacted Netflix demanding money.
His ransom: The unreleased latest
season of their hit series Orange
is the New Black. One month later,
another hacker group demanded
money from Disney, threatening to
release stolen copies of the new
Pirates of the Caribbean movie on
the web. Both companies told the
hackers to sod off – a bold move,
given how many millions they both
stood to lose.
Days later, the world experienced
its worst ransomeware outbreak to
date when malware Wannacry locked
up nearly half a million PCs around
the world.
There is much to learn here.
First, ransomware is real. If you
think its not your problem, read
our story on page 30. Second,
video streaming is the new TV.
It’s now more affordable, and old
TVs can make use of the media
players we review on page 24.
Finally, you don’t have to be a
victim. Disney and Netflix were
not intimidated, and those hackers
disappeared back into the dark
