Meeting 10.10.15 - Medway Youth Parliament

Full parliament meeting 10/10/15
Chair James Peck
Vice Chair Luke Morgan
Introductions and apologies:
Members were asked to give their name, school and year and whether they watched the
Great British bake off and who they wanted to win.
Ice breaker:
To get the meeting started we had an icebreaker; Everyone pulled an animal name out of
the hat. There is a mother, father and baby animal. Each member had to make the noise of
the animal that was on their paper to another person. The other person had to guess what
animal the other was making.
Guest speaker – Healthwatch Medway
For this meeting we had a guest speaker from Healthwatch Medway. Health and social care
watch was opened in 2012, today there are 140 across the country. The idea is to give
people a voice about service. Healthwatch are members of the overview and scrutiny board
(alongside Medway Youth Parliament) as well as on health boards.
Healthwatch Medway asked spoke to us a bit about their service telling us that the average
age range of people coming to see them is mostly forty five up, their feedback is taken to
commitees this means that health care is often tailored to people of this category, and
unfortunately not young people, because it is not often that young people come to see
them, so they would like us to give some help promoting them. Health watch Medway help
change GPs and their Key goal is to be our first port of call for any health issues. They have
been around for 3 years so have developed experience. They are completely independent
and anonymous, who give advice. They take volunteers who they train vigorously then they
take them for example into care homes to asses the quality of care provided. Ideally Health
watch Medway would like to have a database where it is possible for people to compare
health services.
A few of our members had questions.
“Do you give an health care or is it just advice?” Health watch Medway give advice, they had
an incident once when someone saw that they were health watch and started to ask
questions about their health. Health watch Medway give advice not professional health
care.
“Have you ever thought about having representatives in school” to which they responded
that they would really appreciate it, Youth health champions (who did a course during the
holidays) would be a great use. Health watch Medway are trying to reach out to as many
young people as possible, because although it is very important that GPs and health services
are tailored to older people it is also just as important that health services are suitable to
children and teenagers too.
“How can young people contact you” Health watch Medway said they would leave their
details with James (Chair) if we wish to know more. Furthermore they have a website;
http://www.healthwatchmedway.co.uk/ . You can also get into contact via twitter or
message privately.
