Kill = +1 b. In-‐play = 0 c. Error from ANY hitter = -‐1 4) Track the designated players’ points 5) Hitter who reaches +7 first wins the game Coaching notes • Focus o Team defense that works on going from the dig to a successful attack o Make sure second contact allows a successful swing o Good hitting approaches, especially when set is from the backcourt o Keep track of attack percentages, winners/losers • Variations o Modify scoring to meet team needs § If we block the opponent’s attack, it is a point for the hitter § As long as you score, you get the first ball § Work in back row attacker Six on six scramble drill – Russ Rose Coaching notes 1) Set up with 6 on 6 game play 2) Coach starts the rally by tossing the ball in anywhere (either side), such as: a. In the middle for a joust nd b. At the setter so another player takes the 2 contact c. Far off the court so players need to hustle 3) Play the point out, then repeat • Focus o System situations o Focus on second contact accuracy to assist in getting positive attack on third contact • Options o Keep score, two points for out of system kill o Alternate entry to each side, must score three in a row to get a point and rotate Two score variations – Doug Reimer 1) Variation 1: play a regular 6 on 6 game, but keep two separate scores: a. Regular rally score b. Serve and pass score i. Server point = if passers make a “1” or “0” pass ii. Passer point = if passers make a “2” or “3” pass c. Add up the two scores and play to 25 (more or less is desired) points 2) Variation 2: set up with 6 on 6 game play a. Side A serves, side B passes and the rally is played out b. Then side B gets free balls based on pass score i. “3” pass = 3 free balls ii. “2” pass = 2 free balls iii. “1” pass = 1 free ball iv. “0” pass = no free balls c. Next, side B serves and side A passes. Same rules apply Coaching notes • Focus o Even though our focus is out of system, we don’t want to ignore the importance of the serve and pass components. In this drill, you get points for winning the serve pass game. You also get points for winning a rally. So, we are implementing the focus of the practice, along with winning rallies. • Variations o Instead of entering free balls, you can enter an out of system ball or attack the ball to a defender 3
