2016 ILGU Selection Policy
Effective from 1 January 2016
Purpose
This policy applies to the selection of Irish Golf Teams to represent Ireland at the following events …
 European Team Championships (Ladies & Girls)
 European Young Masters
 Home International Matches (Ladies & Girls)
 World Amateur Team Championships (Espirito Santo)
This policy aims to establish a clear, transparent and accountable system of selection of teams that is, as
far as possible, objective and understood by players, parents/guardians, captains, managers, coaches and
all interested parties.
This policy details the following …
 Identify the selection process and criteria for selection of Irish Golf Teams for the above listed
major amateur team championships, which the ILGU Selection Committee will adhere to
 Identify the appeals and grievance process should an individual(s) believe that this policy has not
been implemented with regards to the selection of and Irish Golf Team for the above events

Selection Process and Criteria
The selection of teams shall be in accordance with the following:
European Team Championships (Ladies and Girls)
 Top 2 players from WWAGR (on selection date)
 A further 4 players selected by the ILGU Selection Committee based on the selection
tools outlined below
European Young Masters (U16s)
 Top 1 player from WWAGR (on selection date)
 A further 1 player selected by the ILGU Selection Committee based on the selection tools
outlined below
Home International Matches (Ladies and Girls)
 Top 3 players from WWAGR (on selection date)
 A further 4 players selected by the ILGU Selection Committee based on the selection
tools outlined below
World Amateur Team Championship / Espirito Santo Team
 Top 1 player from WWAGR (on selection date)
 A further 2 players selected by the ILGU Selection Committee based on the selection
tools outlined below
Note: Automatic selections will be the highest ranked WAGR players. Should a player in the automatic
WWAGR position be unavailable for a team the position will not be filled by the next highest
ranked player on WAGR but rather by the selection committee as is the case for all remaining
places.
Performance Related Tools/Yardsticks used for Selection
For all non-automatic WWAGR selections onto the Irish Golf Teams listed above, the ILGU Selection
Committee will select what in its reasonable judgement is the team, or individual, who is available to
compete with distinction at a specific venue or in a specific format of competition, taking into account the
following performance related yardsticks or tools (in no particular order) that it deems to be appropriate:
 Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking
 Performances in tournaments leading up to selection
 Performances in relevant events
 Previous history in relevant events
 Stroke average in competition year
 Suitability of a players game to course set-up
 Ability to be part of a team, contribute towards the goals of the team and deliver in the
environment
 Demonstration of respect for Captain/Coach’s decision of team line-up and order of play, as well
as acceptance of the possibility of being “stood-down” for a session of play
 Personal management, an ability to be “self-sufficient”
 Physically fit to perform in the tournament environment
 Previous history of displaying the following characteristics in the training and tournament
environment …
o Trainability / Openness
o Desire / Commitment
o Ownership
o Time / Self Management
o Technical Skills
o Resilience
Appeals & Grievance Process
In the event that an individual believes that this policy has not been implemented during the selection of
an Irish Golf Team in the above outlined events, the individual concerned has the right to appeal against
any such decision. Leave to appeal can only be sought on one or more of the following grounds:
 The decision was based on error of fact or could not have been reasonably reached by a selection
committee when faced with the evidence before it
 Serious procedural or other irregularity in the proceedings
 The decision was manifestly unreasonable in the light of the facts before the selection committee
The party seeking leave to appeal (the ‘Appellant’) shall serve a Notice of Appeal in writing to the ILGU
Chief Executive within 10 working days following announcement of the selection against which the appeal
is being made.
The Notice of Appeal shall state the following information:
 Date and decision against which the appeal is lodged
 The grounds of appeal relied upon
 Set out the statement of facts upon which the appeal is based
 Include any supporting documentation upon which the Appellant will rely
Upon receipt of the Notice of Appeal, the ILGU Chief Executive will consider the matter and decide if
the Notice of Appeal shows that grounds are made out for the appeal to be determined. If the ILGU Chief
Executive is satisfied that there are grounds to do so he/she shall refer the appeal to the ILGU Board. The
appeal shall be dealt with in accordance with the Appeals process under the ILGU Discipline Appeals
Regulations and the ILGU Appeals Panel may reject the appeal; partially uphold the appeal; or fully uphold
the appeal. In the event that the Appeals Panel partially or fully upholds the appeal, it shall also specify
what action should then take place.
Policy Enforcement
This policy will be enforced by the ILGU High Performance Manager.
Review
This policy will be subject to annual review and amendment.
Appendices
1. Eligibility for International Selection
To be eligible for selection on an Irish team a player must have one of the following
qualifications:
 Irish Nationality of father, mother, grandmother or grandfather
 She complies with conditions of the event regarding age and handicap criteria
 Birth of player in Ireland
 Five (5) years residence in Ireland
No player may be selected on a ladies team who has ever played against Ireland or competed in
the Close Championship of any other country within the last ten (10) years, except in the Girls’
Internationals and a Girls’ Close Championship.
In addition a player should compete in the following events:
 A District Women’s Championship
 Irish Women’s Close Amateur Championship
 Interprovincial Matches, if selected.
 Irish Women’s Open Amateur Stroke play Championship
