FUTURE TENSES (pracovný list č. 5)
1. Present Continuous vs. Going to
This is Ben´s diary for the next week:
He is playing tennis on Monday afteroon. = He is going to play tennis.
He is going to the dentist on Tuesday morning. = He is going to go to the dentist.
He is having dinner with Kate on Friday evening. = He is going to have dinner.
In all these examples, Ben has already decided and arranged to do these things.
2. Presnet Simple
My English class is on Monday at 9 o ´clock.
My train leaves at 11:30, so I need to be at the station by 11:15.
What time does the film begin this evening?
We use the present simple when we talk about timetables, programmes, etc. (for
public transport, cinemas, theatres, etc.)

3. Going to (do)
Look at those black clouds! It is going to rain.
I feel terrible. I think I am going to be sick.
Look at that woman! She is going to have a baby.
Something is going to happen in the future. We can see it and predict on that basis.
4. Will – Future Simple
Oh, I have left the door open. I will go and shut it.
That bag looks heavy. I will help you with it.
Did you phone Lucy? Oh, no, I forgot. I will phone her now.
We decide to do something at the time of speaking.

I think
I wonder
I´ll probably be home late tonight.
I haven´t seen Carol today. I expect she´ll phone this evening.
Don´t worry about the exam. I´m sure you´ll pass it.
Do you think Sara will like the present we bought her?

7. Future Continuous Tense
Half an hour from now
Half an hour from now, the theatre will be full. Everyone will be watching the play.
This time nex week I will be on holiday. I´ll be lying on the beach or swimming.
Don´t phone me between 7 and 8. We´ll be having dinner.
I will be doing something at the exact time.
8. Future Perfect Tense
Three hours from now.
Three hours from now, the theatre will be empty. The play will have finished.
Everybody will have gone home.
Sally always leaves for work at 8.30 in the morning. She won´t be at home at 9
o´clock – she´ll have gone to work.
We are late. The film will already have started by the time we get to the cinema.

We use future perfect to say that something will already be completed before
a time in the future.
9. Put the verb into the correct form.
1. Phone me after 8 o´clock. ______________________ (we/finish) dinner by then.
2. Tomorrow afternoon we´re going to play tennis from 3 o´clock until 4.30. So at
4 o´clock, _____________________________ (we/play) tennis.
3. Ben is on holiday and he is spending his money very quickly. If he continues like

holiday.
4. Do you think ________________ (you/still/do) the same job in ten years´ time?
