SPRING 2010 BENJAMIN T. SIMS MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP Dr. Benjamin T. Sims, a professor of mathematics at Eastern, passed away in Spokane on September 12, 1992. He came to Eastern as an associate professor in 1967 and was promoted to full professor in 1971. He taught at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, 1964-66. He maintained an interest in international issues and students and served as a mentor for Eastern’s students from the Middle East. Sims was the founder and served as advisor of the EWU Pi Mu Epsilon national math honor society, was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, and was the department librarian. He served on numerous committees at Eastern and was a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the American Scientific Affiliation. The annual Benjamin T. Sims Mathematics Scholarship is available to students attending Eastern Washington University during Spring Quarter 2010. A minimum of $400 will be awarded to the winning applicant. Students applying for the scholarship must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be a full-time EWU student Spring Quarter 2010; 2. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA at EWU; 3. Must be a major in any Mathematics Department program, except Elementary 4. 5. Mathematics Education; Must be at least junior class standing (90 credits or more) by the end of Winter Quarter 2010; and Must have completed Math 225, 231, & 360 by the end of Fall Quarter 2009. In order to apply for the scholarship, the following materials must be submitted to the Financial Aid & Scholarship Office by Friday, February 26, 2010. 1. The signed application form; 2.
