Kingswood High School Teacher Name:_Matt McGuigan___ Class: __B-Block; 18 Students_____ Team: ____Physical Education_______________ Overview of Lesson Plan: Day 3 of a 5 day unit of Volleyball. Students will be given time to finish their workout logs from last class. They will then be given the time to practice their skills in a game like situation. Today will also be the day to complete the mid-assessment for each student. Suggested Time Allowance: 90 min Objectives; 1. Students will call each serve when playing a small sided game of volleyball by the end of class. 2. Students will call the ball before they get it when playing small sided games of volleyball. 3. Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of volleyball by playing a small sided (2v2) game of volleyball. Curriculum Connection: Standards Standard 2 - The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance. Standard 3 - The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness. Standard 4 - The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. Resources/Materials: - Volleyball nets - Volleyballs (15) - Game Assessment (One for each student) Activities/Procedures: Dynamic Stretching When students are done changing they will complete a 5 minute jog, this will warm up their muscle and get their blood pumping for physical activity. They will then follow the student leader in a set of dynamic stretches. Weight Room, Fitness Logs (Continued from last class) Students will finish their workout logs from the last class. They will also complete a cardiovascular exercise that burns 100 calories or more. Each day I will challenge students to burn 100 calories and slowly progress to 200 by the end of the quarter. Review of Skills Last class I introduced the game of volleyball and the skills used to play the game. Today will be a time to allow student demonstration of each skill and review the rules and regulation of the games. I will also handout the pre-assessments so students can see what aspects of the game assessment they need to work on. Game Play (Ladder Tournament) Students will play 5v5 and each game will be 3 minutes long. After each game students will rotate around to each court. This will allow me to complete the mid-assessment for each student and also allow time for student to practice their skills. Cues: Volleyball Cues handout, Attached below Content Analysis: Bump Application Use bump to pass to a partner with no net Bump to partner over the net Bump in a game of volleyball Underhand Serve Application Use underhand serve during practice Use during a small game of one on one Play doubles while using the underhand serve Set Application Use the skill during a game Use set in competition to see how many you can set in a row Wrap-Up/Homework: - Review the volleyball handout - For any missed days students need to complete a fitness/health article review or complete a fitness journal entry. Further Questions for Discussion: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Where do you serve from? How do you serve? What are the three skills? Why do we use each skill? What is the sequence of the skills during a game? How many people can play on a team? When do you score a point? What are the positions? Evaluation/Assessment: Mid-assessment – Complete this assessment on each student. This is the game assessment and the pre-assessment scores will be on the same assessment so improvement can be seen while assessing and areas that need to be worked on can be seen on this assessment. Vocabulary: - Bump- It is utilized to pass the serve, play balls below the waist, play hard driven balls, and contact balls located far from the player. - Set- Most controllable of the ball-handling skills. Used for accurately passing any ball above the head to a teammate and for the setting technique of passing the ball to an attacker with specific height, trajectory, and placement. - Under arm Serve- Is the process of getting the ball over the net to start the volley. Used by swinging the arm under in a pendulum motion. More accurate for beginning, students. Can only score when your team is serving. Extension Activities: Review Assessments – Hand the game assessment to each student it will now have their pre and mid scores. Review each component and answer any questions they have on the assessment. Tell the students how they can improve on each component. Interdisciplinary Connections: Math – Students will be in charge of keeping their own scores. Accommodations/Modifications: There will be 3 types of balls varying in size and weight. There is the regular volleyball for advanced students, a large volleyball that is much lighter and a beach ball. Depending on the students skill leave they may use the volleyball that is suitable for them. There will also be one net set up that is lower than the other for students with disabilities.
