Message From the Head Referee - Pearland

Dear Athletes,
On behalf of our race committee, we welcome to the 6th annual Shadow Creek Ranch Triathlon
presented by Lewis Jewelers. We can’t thank you enough for your participation this weekend, especially
those of you who are first timers. We pride ourselves in putting on a professional production and your
safety is our number one priority.
The Shadow Creek Ranch Triathlon presented by Lewis Jewelers, has been and continues to be
successful because of your support and the support of volunteers, valued partners and the Shadow
Creek Ranch Community. We feel very fortunate to once again have some of the top triathletes not only
from Houston, but from around the south central region.
The goal of the race is to bring a very competitive field of athletes to our area and to expose the greater
Pearland community to an exciting sport. I encourage you to make it a weekend. Stay in Pearland, eat in
Pearland.
It’s an honor and a privilege to have each of you at our race, and we hope and pray that you will have a
safe, successful weekend. Please feel free to give us feedback on how we can continue to make the race
even better in the years to come.
We hope you have a wonderful race.
Sincerely,
Bryan and Colette Kraham
Your Race Director Team
Message From the Head Referee
A Message from the Head Referee to all age-group competitors...
Welcome to this USA Triathlon sanctioned event. You are racing under the USAT Competitive Rules. In
order to minimize misunderstandings on race day, I hope you will take the time to read the following
summary of the Position Violations, which you know as the drafting rules.
I have reduced the Position Rules to the following concepts, which everyone can remember:
 Ride on the right side of your lane.
 Keep three bike lengths between yourself and the cyclist in front of you.
 Pass on the left of the cyclist in front, never on the right.
 Complete your pass within 15 seconds.
 If passed, you must drop completely out of the zone, to the rear, before attempting to re-pass.
Remember you are racing in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event and there are USAT certified referees on
the course to ensure fairness in the competition. There will be NO WARNINGS if you commit a foul during
competition. Triathlon is an individual event and you must take personal responsibility to understand the
rules and avoid penalties.
At the end of the race all citations by the marshals are reviewed by the head referee who then decides if a
penalty should be assessed. The head referee's ruling is final in the case of Position Violations
and there are no protests or appeals of Position penalties.
Marshals commonly cite the following violations:
 Position- riding on the left side of the lane without passing.
 Blocking - left side riding and impeding the forward progress of another competitor
 Illegal Pass - passing on the right.
 Overtaken - failing to drop back three bike lengths before re-passing
 Drafting - following a leading cyclist closer than three bike lengths and failing to pass within 15
seconds.
Though Position Violations carry a time penalty for first offense, two citations will result in an additional
penalty and if you are cited for three violations, you will be disqualified. Be sure to check the penalty
sheet before you leave the race site and have a chat with the head referee if you have any questions.
Make sure your helmet is a CPSC approved model. All helmets legally sold in the US are CPSC approved
but if you purchased your helmet in a different country it might be illegal for use in sanctioned events.
While on your bike, always have your chinstrap securely fastened - before, during and after the event!
The chin strap rule is easy to follow, so don't forget - that's a DQ!
Wear your race numbers, don't leave your trash on the course, and don't carry or use any portable audio
devices.
Remember to treat other athletes, volunteers, and officials with courtesy and consideration. Failure to do
so is called Unsportsmanlike Conduct and you will be disqualified.
All that being said, I hope you have a great race, lots of fun, and achieve all your goals

Other Parking Options within 3/4 mile from race site:

Timing Chips
YOU MUST WEAR YOUR TIMING

REGISTER A TIME.
The proper placement of your timing chip
is on your LEFT ankle with the flat side of
the chip facing out. We will have a chip

RACE COURSE
While our courses are very well marked, it is your responsibility to know the courses.
SWIM = 500 meters
THIS IS NOT WET SUIT LEGAL. WATER IS TOO WARM.
Due to the construction of new homes in the field next to the race site, the builders had placed two (2) excavators in
the lake in which we will be swimming. They had built two (2) dirt 'pads' for lack of a better term. They extend
approximately 25 yards into the lake and are submerged about 2 feet under water. We will have to swim around
these 'pads' and we will adjust the swim start location.
The swim is a 500 meter swim. It is a straight line swim (with two small adjustments due to the above) that is right up
against the shore line.
USAT swim rules with regards to making forward progress:
4.2 Bottom Contact and Resting. A participant may stand on the bottom or rest by holding an inanimate object such
as a buoy, boat, rope or floating object. Excluding the bottom, a participant shall not use any inanimate object to
gain forward progress. A violation of this section shall result in a variable time penalty, unless the Head Referee in
his/her sole discretion determines that (i) the violation was substantial and resulted in an unfair time advantage, or (ii)
the violation constituted endangerment under Section 3.4(1).
We also want to make you aware of a cement "rim" that is just under the water line as you enter and exit the lake.
You will step down about a foot to the clay bottom but we want you to be aware of it up front. We are expecting
normal water levels this year, so we will have signs in the water at entry and exit telling you to step down and step
up.
BIKE COURSE- TWO (2) LOOPS = 13.2 miles
YOU MUST COMPLETE TWO LOOPS OF THE BIKE COURSE OR BE DISQUALIFIED.
Although the new route is 3 miles shorter at 13.2 miles, it remains just as fast and flat, with improved safety. There
will be 46 police officers on course to assure that, but as per USAT rules, you are responsible for obeying all traffic
laws unless indicated otherwise by a police officer. By removing the u-turns on 518, the course becomes square in
shape, with all right hand turns minus the turn from Kingsley to Trinity Bay. The course will continue to be TWO
LOOPS.
RUN = 3.23 miles
The run is a flat and fast "lollipop" course. IT IS SUPER IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO KNOW THAT YOU MUST RUN
ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE PATH FROM TRANSITION DOWN PAST THE TURN IN FROM THE GREEN SPACE
TRAIL as we have two way traffic coming on that short section of the course. We will have volunteers and signs to
remind you. This is to avoid cross over for those finishing and those exiting transition.
