NEWS RELEASE
The Bothun-Peterson Post 213 of the American Legion in Sherwood will conduct
Memorial Day Services on May 28th. This is the 75th annual celebration of Memorial Day
services that are conducted with our Canadian counterparts.
In 1937, military veterans from Sherwood, who were then members of the Legion Post in
Mohall because Sherwood did not have an active Legion Post, celebrated the 1st Memorial Day
at the New White Theater. A Canadian attended that ceremony, and the following year, 1938,
joint forces from the U. S. and Canada began a tradition that is still carried on today. U. S. and
Canadian veterans exchange flags at the International Boundary in a short ceremony. A program
follows that. It has been held at the Border Theater in Sherwood, the Sherwood Memorial Hall,
and at the Sherwood School gymnasium. That is followed by a parade down Main Street, and
services at the Cemetery. Usually a lunch followed the ceremonies, and then a variety of
activities took place including baseball games, softball games, rodeos, and dances in the evening.
This years’ Memorial Day will begin at 10:15 (CDT) with the flag ceremony at the
border. A program at the Sherwood School gymnasium will begin at 11:00 a.m. A parade down
Main Street with a stop at the Firemen’s Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony will follow the
program at the school. The final ceremony is at the Sherwood Union Cemetery, where wreaths
are laid at the Unknown Soldier memorial. The American Legion Auxiliary will provide a lunch
at the Sherwood Memorial Hall for all who attend the Memorial Day services.
The main speaker for this years’ program is Lieutenant Governor Drew Wrigley. Also on
the program is Ms. Patricia Varga, the Dominion President of the Royal Canadian Legion from
Unity, Saskatchewan.
Invitations have been issued to former Sherwood residents who were members of the
military. They don’t have to be members of the American Legion to participate in the services.
