Note Detectors
DO62 (Pounds Sterling)
Please retain these instructions for future reference. These instructions are also
available in other formats.
General description
The note detector indicates the value of sterling or euro bank notes. It has a simple,
one button design, and is easy to use. The button when pressed and held down gives
discreet vibrations according to the note value. It has been designed to enable people
to verify the value of bank notes when paying for goods or receiving change. It is small
and lightweight, so is easy to take out and about.
Orientation
Front
There is a single round recessed operating button which can be felt about one third of
the way down the front.
Back
There is a raised ridge on the back of the note detector, near to the slot entrance (at
the top edge). This helps detect larger notes such as a Scottish £100.
There are also two small screws opposite each other at the other end of the note
detector, which when unscrewed opens the device to expose the battery.
Top edge
There is a slot at the top edge of the detector (which is round to the touch), and this is
where you need to insert your notes.
Using the product
To operate the note detector hold your thumb over the button, but do not press the
button at this stage. Insert the note to be tested into the slot at the top sideways on,
and slide it all the way in to the detector until it can go no further.
Please note: Ensure that the note is placed squarely into the detector, and not at an
angle.
1
To detect what note is inserted in to the slot, press and hold the button. You will feel
the note detector vibrate several times depending on the value of the note:
DO62 (Pounds Sterling) Note detector
One vibration = £5; Two vibrations = £10; Three vibrations = £20; Four vibrations =
£50; Four vibrations and the note extends past the raised ridge on the back of the note
detector = Scottish £100.
The note detector also indicates the value of all Scottish notes.
DO63 (Euro) Note detector
One vibration = €5; Two vibrations = €10; Three vibrations = €20; Four vibrations =
€50; Five vibrations = €100 or higher value.
Battery replacement
Some sighted assistance may be needed to help change the battery.
The note detector uses one CR2032 battery. Replacement batteries can be ordered
from RNIB under product code CP08.
To replace the battery lay the note detector with the front side down on a flat surface.
With a small screwdriver (Pozidrive or Phillips) remove the two screws on the back of
the detector and lift the back case off. The battery can now be removed from its
exposed recess, which is located towards the bottom edge of the opened case. The
replacement battery should be fitted with its flat, positive side upwards.
Please note: Take care to align the case halves and not to over tighten the screws on
re-assembly.
Don’t throw away worn out batteries. Place them in a container intended for this
purpose so that they can be collected and recycled.
Please note: RNIB does not guarantee batteries.
Hints and Tips
1. Align the note squarely when in the detector. If it is held at a significant angle it may
indicate a higher than true value.
2. Keep the button pressed for long enough for all the vibrations to occur. If you
release it too quickly it may not have time to complete the reading. Three seconds is
sufficient.
3. This device is not a counterfeit currency detector and cannot indicate whether a note
is genuine or not.
2
4. The device will not vibrate when detecting a Scottish £1 note or if there is a flat
battery.
