Welcome to Commodity Codes 101 All you ever wanted to know about Commodity Codes but were afraid to ask. What is NIGP? NIGP stands for the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing, Inc. This is the developer of the NIGP Commodity Book. Humble ISD / Munis has incorporated the NIGP Commodity Code book for Purchasing operations. What is a Commodity Code • Commodity codes are standard classification codes for products and services used to detail where money is spent within our District. • Commodity codes can be found on the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts website. http://comptroller.texas.gov/procurement/tools/comm-book/index.html Importance of Commodity Codes • Classifies purchase requisition • Routes requisition to the approving buyer • Used to search for how much is being spent on a service or type of purchase • Helps track aggregate purchases District wide • Used to pull information to ascertain if new proposals are needed Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts • Click on look up NIGP Class/Item codes • Scroll down to this Commodity Code Listing by Class Commodity Codes – Class Code Class Codes • The first three numbers indicate the class code. • The class code is a generalized description of what you are purchasing. Commodity Codes – Item Code Class Item Code • The last two numbers combined with the first three numbers indicates the class item code. • The class item code is a detailed description of what you are purchasing. If you were ordering adding machine paper …. Your class code would be 615 – which identifies OFFICE SUPPLIES. The class specifies which type of office supply you are purchasing. -04 shows you are purchasing adding machine paper. The commodity code for adding machine paper is 61504. (No dash required) Search Commodity Code Alpha This section allows you to search by typing in a key word or putting the three digit class code. Search Results by Keyword Reminders • The only time you would not need a commodity code is for shipping. • Fund 865/887 always use commodity class code of 996 and 99600 regardless of what you are purchasing. • If ordering multiple items with different class codes (first three numbers) use the code you are spending the most on. • Warehouse orders use commodity class code of 000 to ensure they are routed for warehouse approval.
