2011 MN HOSA Spring Leadership Conference DATE March 22nd-March 24th TIMES Tuesday: 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm Wednesday: 7:00 am- 4:00 pm (Orientation prior to events) LOCATION Best Western Kelly Inn 100 4th AVE SO, St. Cloud, MN 56301 OBJECTIVE To judge all participants in events of their career interests using guidelines from National HOSA. The outcome of this event is to place students to become eligible for the National Leadership Conference in June and represent MN HOSA to the best of their abilities. All events will follow the national guidelines which can be found on the www.hosa.org website. Event CPR/ First AidThis is a 2-person team event. Each team will be given a scenario and will have to perform at least two skills that will be rated. Day & Times Tuesday, March 23rd 10:00 am– 3:30 pm Event Description To provide the Health Science student with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in team CPR/First Aid in emergency care. This event will consist of two rounds of competition for a 2-person team. Round One is a written, multiple-choice test of knowledge and understanding. Round Two consists of the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. Wednesday, March 23rd Job Seeking Skills – Participants will fill out an application. They should have a resume’ with them. Each will go through the interview process. To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in basic first aid and rescue breathing in emergency care. Same description as above. After a Written round one – Round two consists of the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines. Scenario Equipment provided Students should bring own sheets and supplies state in guidelines To encourage Health Science students to develop and/or refine the skills necessary to apply for and obtain employment. Competitors shall apply for any healthcarerelated position for which they are trained or are being trained. Competitors will prepare a cover letter and resume to bring with them to the conference. At the conference, competitors will complete a job application (at orientation) and participate in a job interview (assigned time received at orientation.). Teams consisting of two (2) competitors shall develop a visual display of a specific career or cluster of careers in health. The display allows the students to express ideas through an artistic medium to highlight the benefits of a particular career focus. Extemporaneous Health PostersEach participant will be checked in with supplies, given a poster board and secret topic and will have up to three hours to complete a poster representing the topic. Wednesday, March 23rd HOSA Bowl- Run like a knowledge Bowl with teams being put on a grid. Buzzers used. Need a reader and a timer and scorer. Questions are given on Medical Terms, history, HOSA, Health related topics. Creative Problem SolvingA team of 3-4 persons given a situation and will be given time to create a solution to the problem. Competitors will photograph three different health professionals, edit the photos using computer software technology, and then present the three printed pictures to a panel of judges. EVENT MANAGER: This event is to encourage Health Science students to improve their ability to analyze and interpret current health and HOSA-related issues and express and communicate this interpretation through development of a poster. EVENT MANAGER: The event shall be in the form of an individual creation of a poster conducted in a setting with individual work tables and sufficient space for each competitor to carry out his/her form of artistic expression, to be completed within three (3) hours of work time. The prepared speech shall be a maximum of five (5) minutes in length. Participants must bring own watch, pencil/pens/ tape/ scissors and gloves 3-4 Team event- Goes through preliminary round of position question followed by modified form of Lincoln-Douglas Debate. 2010-11 topic is: Health Professions Online: The BEST Solution to the Healthcare Workforce Shortage. The question to be considered in the preliminary round will be based on this year’s topic. 2-Team Scenario The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The instruction must include the use of presentation tools such as a student-made video, computer demonstration software, slides, overhead transparencies, or any other form of media. Teams will provide instruction to a selected group of learners. Team of two- After a written test they will go to Round Two and will be given a case study related to forensic medicine. Teams will have six (6) minutes to analyze a case study, which will include written information and may include physical evidence. Finally, teams will be given thirty (30) minutes to write their conclusions. Community Awareness is a service project designed to raise community awareness of a health-related issue of local, state and/or national interest. The project, selected by the HOSA chapter, should be one that addresses one specific health issue, need or concern and makes a worthwhile contribution to the community. The project should have a direct relationship to the organization's purposes and to Health Science Education. Activities are then planned to make the community aware of the health issue. The chapter documents each activity as it is planned and conducted. When the project is completed, the chapter develops a portfolio that documents and explains the project and activities. The chapter will also develop a presentation that will be given by a chapter team of 2-4 competitors. Round one is a written test -Round Two - teams will be given a secret problem with motions to perform during the meeting. Public Service Announcement Wednesday, March 23rd 9:45 am - 11:30 am In this event, teams consisting of three-six (3-6) members will produce a 30-second Public Service Announcement (PSA). Be Prepared MN MRC Partnership Wednesday, March 23rd 1:30 pm- 2:30 pm ** Event The MRC Partnership event is designed to encourage HOSA chapters to initiate and maintain a partnership with the Medical Reserve Corps. The partnership will promote and support the mission of HOSA, the mission of the Medical Reserve Corps, and the priorities of the United States Surgeon General. The event will consist of the implementation and documentation of partnership activities that contribute to strong, healthy and prepared communities. EVENT MANAGER: 1. 2. Managers will be in charge of getting packets for the event and attending orientation before event occurs to help other judges to understand the event.
