The conference will be a two-day event, showcasing capacity building opportunities to over two hundred delegates. MNPHA’s First Annual Conference and Gala Dinner will be a special event to celebrate all aspects of the Affordable and Non-Profit Housing Sector. The Conference will be held at the Victoria Inn Hotel and Conference Centre, located at 1808 Wellington Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba from November 22-23, 2012. Manitoba Non-Profit Housing Association’s Conference is designed and tailored to meet the unique needs and interests of the full spectrum of the non-profit housing community. All who are associated with the non-profit housing sector, including Board members, executive staff, management, front-line and support staff and volunteers will benefit from this conference. The conference is also of value to housing researchers, students, and policy makers, as well as funding partners who interface with the affordable and non-profit housing sector. Delegates will be able to attend educational sessions, in a variety of formats: workshops, forums and panel discussions. MNPHA’s Vision All households in Manitoba have access to safe, affordable housing. All members of the Association consistently achieve excellence by using best practices. The public, private and non-profit sectors work respectfully together toward developing and maintaining safe, secure and affordable housing. MNPHA’s Principles Manitoba Non-Profit Housing Association (MNPHA) will be a member controlled and supported organization. It is accountable directly to its membership through its Board of Directors, drawn from and selected by the membership. The Board will operate under a Policy Governance model to set policy and direction for the Association. The Association will focus on the needs of the diverse requirements of non-profits to ensure that services and programs are supporting common goals, to formally assess delivery of services by engaging our membership through annual surveys to ensure we optimize membership satisfaction. The Association will develop opportunities/programs that will assist the membership to improve financial viability and sustainability of the affordable housing sector. The Association will work in partnership and foster relationships with all stakeholders, including all levels of government, the Private Sector and affordable housing supporters with the goal to secure a strategic alliance. On November 22 and 23, 2012, the MNPHA will be holding their 1st Annual Conference. It will be promoted under the tag line “Let’s Get Connected!” MNPHA Conference Business Plan Page 2 1. Goals of the 1st Annual Conference Creating a network of Non-Profit and Affordable Housing Providers their partners and supports Building a MNPHA membership Educating Members and Supporters on issues and trends in the Non-Profit and Affordable Housing Sector 2. Objectives of the 1st Annual Conference To attract 175-200 attendees as delegates To build a membership of 100 in year one 3. Administration The key people for point of contact is Shirley Tillett, TCM-EVM, Conference Planner, Dianna Mae Hocaluk, MNPHA Executive Director and Laurie Socha, Conference Chair. An Event Coordinator will be appointed by the Shirley Tillett Associates Inc to provide assistance as required. MNPHA Board Members will head subcommittees and Dianna Mae Hocaluk will participate on ex-officio on all committees. Meeting reminders, notices and agendas will be distributed prior to each planning subcommittee meeting. Following the meetings, notes and action items will be developed, distributed and retained for future reference. A critical path (instrument to track major and minor tasks, prioritized deadline dates and individuals responsible) will be developed and monitored throughout the planning cycle along with a run sheet (tool developed to track all activities on day of event) to ensure a smooth and successful delivery of the conference. Marketing For this first year, MNPHA will be providing a reduced rate to all members. MNPHA along with Manitoba Housing will send an email “blast” to all potential members promoting attendance. Emails will be distributed, along with the mailing of “Save the Date” postcards, then mailed invitations and followed by a personal phone call. The MNPHA website is currently promoting the event and will be updated as more information is confirmed. A joint; MNPHA & MB Housing Press/Media Release will be put out in late summer and repeated in early fall. MNPHA wants to connect to all of the key players in the non-profit and affordable housing sector. Registration is not limited strictly to housing providers but to supportive services such as mental health, addictions, homelessness workers and health authorities. MNPHA wants to engage landlords that provide affordable housing and create an opportunity for those to learn they are not the only ones out there! The association also wants to ensure that all properties having support from Manitoba Housing are aware that they can claim membership fees as a legitimate operating expense. Manitoba Housing is a great supporter of the association and is prepared to contribute in-kind supports of speakers, materials and promotions. MNPHA Conference Business Plan Page 5 MNPHA will be holding focus groups late summer to promote the association, encourage membership, research what topics are important to our sector and promote the conference. MNPHA Board and staff are constantly promoting the Conference and Trade Show to potential attendees and supporters. A list of potential members is currently being developed by MNPHA and will be continuously updated throughout the year and into the future. MNPHA will work closely with Manitoba Housing to include workshops and information they feel important to our sector. A delegate from Manitoba Housing sits on the Planning Committee and provides input from their office. MNPHA is also working with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to provide educational information, guest speakers and federal greetings to our members and supporters. CMHC has confirmed their participation by sponsoring a conference activity aligning themselves with the celebration of National Housing Day activities on November 22, 2012. To get notice of our conference and intrigue potential members MNPHA will: Hold Focus Groups of 15-20 potential members at a time to hear what the needs are in our sector Find out what kinds of workshops the sector would like to see Promote the association and the conference through website, invitations, email surveys Create a media release Work with potential media specialists for story opportunities in the newspaper, TV and radio before and after event Send out “Save the Date” e-mails and postcards Send out reminders with links to registration and hotel registry to potential members and partnering and similar groups and associations Special requests to government departments to share E-Flyer with potential attendees Have a combined letter from Manitoba Housing CEO and MNPHA President sent out to all projects under Manitoba Housing’s Portfolio Invitations to Aboriginal Groups Phone calls to potential and current members and partners/supporters MNPHA Conference Business Plan Page 6 6. (Management) Inc. for the past 11 years. S.A.M. (Management) Inc. is a non-profit Property Management company in its 37th year of operations. S.A.M.’s portfolio includes a variety of housing projects. These include subsidized and enriched housing, co-operatives, life leases, single persons and senior citizens rental properties. Laurie has sat on the Board of the Professional Property Managers Association and sits on the Education Committee. Laurie also is a participant on the Co-operative Strategy Working group, a Delegate for CHF Canada on the Co-operators Insurance Regional Committee and is an active member of the Co-op Housing Development Group. Having the new Manitoba Non Profit Housing Association is a real asset to strengthening and supporting the housing sector in Manitoba. Laurie is committed to ensuring the Association and upcoming conference are a huge success. Bringing like minded and passionate people from around the province together for the conference will be an amazing event. MNPHA Conference Business Plan Page 8 Shirley Tillett, TCP-EVM, Conference Planner Over the past 25 years, Shirley Tillett, a certified Event Manager, has developed a wide range of diversified skills, achievements and career competencies as a senior manager within the corporate and non-profit sectors and through instructing and working with volunteers and boards. Established in 1997, STA Inc. provides services in Association Management; Conference, Event & Meeting Management; Trade Show Management and delivers Customized Event Management Training & Workshops for the corporate and non-profit sector. Shirley is an accomplished public speaker, trainer and facilitator. She has taught Conference and Special Event Management at Red River College, currently facilitates workshops at Volunteer Manitoba and delivers the Event Coordinator workshop series in coordination with the Manitoba Tourism Education Council (MTEC) laying the foundation for the Events Manager and Events Coordinator national certification. She also delivers customized workshops and training within the corporate, government and non-profit sectors. MNPHA Conference Business Plan Page 9 Dianna Mae Hocaluk, MNPHA Executive Director Dianna Mae has been working in the Non-Profit/Affordable Housing sector for the past 10 years. Beginning in advocating for affordable housing, to fundraising and eventually building a non-profit charitable apartment complex. Her ability to see a need then pursue it at any cost shows her persistence and desire for successful outcomes. Dianna Mae’s experience in project management and conference planning will be sure to keep resources, time, money and scope of the conference under scrutiny at all times. Dianna Mae’s dedication and excitement is guaranteed to ensure a dynamic 2012 MNPHA Conference. 7. Event Evaluation In order to measure the success and outcomes of the conference, MNPHA will develop surveys to be completed by the delegates at the end of each workshop/information session to gather data and feedback for future events and conferences. On line “Survey Monkey” will also be used following the conference to request feedback on the overall event. MNPHA Conference Business Plan Page 10 8. Planning Cycle The first meeting of the Planning Committee was April 16, 2012. Regular scheduled meetings are being held until November 2012. 9. Resource Development Manitoba Housing is the Marquee Sponsor of the Conference and is providing many inkind services and supplies. CMHC is sponsoring a luncheon in honour of National Housing Day which is celebrated November 22 across Canada annually. Sponsorship Packages have been developed for items identified in the revenue portion of the budget. Sponsorship Committee Chair; Helmut Epp and his Committee will be contacting vendors, suppliers, financial institutions and industry related businesses.
