INTRODUCTION
This document outlines the qualification process and selection procedures of Triathlon
Manitoba for determining those athletes who will be selected to represent Manitoba at
the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Manitoba as members of our 2017 CSG Triathlon
Team. The primary objective of the selection process is to select the team that is most
capable of achieving podium performances at the Games or helping the team achieve
the best team ranking amongst the other Provinces and Territories.
TEAM SIZE
Team size will consist of three (3) male athletes and three (3) female athletes.
ELIGIBILITY & SELECTION CRITERIA
Section # 1: Eligibility Criteria
1.1
To be eligible for selection to the team, athletes must meet all of the following
criteria:
a. Eligible athletes must be members in good standing with Triathlon
Manitoba at time of qualification and must maintain this status until the
completion of the Games.
b. Eligible athletes must meet the Manitoba residence policy set out by the
Canada Games Technical Package.
c. Eligible athletes must meet the selection criteria as detailed in Section 2.
d. Eligible athletes must sign and return to Triathlon Manitoba an athlete
agreement contract to compete in the Games.
e. Athletes must be 16 – 19 years of age on December 31st, 2017. This
means all athletes must be born between January 1st, 1998 and
December 31st, 2001.
f. Exceptional underage athletes can apply for a discretionary spot based
on youth series and relay results.
g. All athletes must be draft legal certified by a Triathlon Canada certified
Competition Development Certified Coach.
h. Performance times must be set between November 1st, 2016 and June
15th, 2017. These times can be set at Swim Manitoba sanctioned events
(swim), Athletics Manitoba sanctioned events (run) or at certified time
trials conducted or approved by the Canada Summer Games Coach.
i. All athletes selected to the team by discretionary selection agree to train
full time with the Triathlon Manitoba’s Canada Summer Games Team
from time of selection until the completion of the Games, unless alternate
arrangements are made with the Canada Summer Games Coach.
j. Final Team selection will be announced by June 30th, 2017.
Section # 2: Selection Criteria
2.1
Three (3) male athletes and three (3) female athletes will be selected to the
team pursuant to this section 2.
2.2
Up to 1 spot will be available by automatic qualification at the June 18th,
2017 Junior National Championships in Ottawa. The top male and female
athletes placing in the top 10 overall will gain selection as individual event
competitors.
2.3
The 2nd and 3rd spots and any spots not claimed via athletes meeting criteria
2.2 will be team concept athletes and will be discretionary selections.
Discretionary selection will be made by a three (3) member team selection
committee. The committee will be formed in May or June 2017 and will
consist of a representative from the Canadian Sport Centre Manitoba, a
representative from Triathlon Manitoba, and a representative from Triathlon
Manitoba’s MTC Program committee. The objective of the team concept
discretionary selection process is to select the team that is most capable of
achieving podium performances at the Games or helping the team achieve
the best team ranking amongst the other Provinces and Territories.
2.4
In making discretionary selections, results from all Junior Elite and Elite
Competitions during the 2016 and 2017 race seasons conducted prior to the
selection deadline of June 30th, 2017 will be reviewed. The selection
committee will also look at results from 2016 non draft legal events and swim
and run performance times during the 8 months leading into team selection.
Greater weight will be placed on draft legal results than non draft legal results
as they more accurately reflect the racing demands at the Canada Summer
Games. A maximum of 3 time trials may be included to give athletes an
opportunity to further demonstrate their ability. These time trials won't be
mandatory but could be important for those with a limited race resume.
Results from the June 4th 2017 Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin USA Junior
Series race will also be heavily weighted by the selection committee.
Section # 3: Alternates
3.1
One (1) male and one (1) female alternate will be selected using the above
criteria in section 2.3 and 2.4.
3.2
Alternates will compete as members of the team if one of the following
situations occurs:
a.
An injury to a selected team member so that he or she is unable to
compete at the Games.
b.
Selected team member does not meet the Eligibility Criteria set out in
Section 1.

race” will be determined by, but is not limited to, the following factors:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Illness
Physical fitness
Level of heath
Unrecovered injury
Competitive readiness
Failure to meet Triathlon Manitoba’s Code of Conduct for Canada
Games
•
3.3 The Team Selection Committee has the sole discretion in determining that a
selected team member is unable to compete at the Games because of one of
the reasons set out in Section 3.2 above.
Section # 4: Unforeseen Circumstances
4.1
In situations where unforeseen circumstances do not allow the Selection
Process to be fairly and objectively applied, the Team Selection Committee,
in consultation with the Triathlon Manitoba Board of Directors, reserves the
right to rule on an appropriate course of action.
4.2
The Team Selection Committee reserves the right to review and change any
selection criteria or decision related to the Selection Process in the case of
rule or policy changes from Triathlon Canada or the Canada Summer Games
that affect the selection criteria set out in this Selection Process document or
any team selection decisions.
