Interview with Lowry What role do you play in West Side Story and why do you like playing it? I play the part of Clarice in the play. She is a Jet girl and she happens to be very cool. I enjoy playing this part because in the play she has so many friends which now applies to real life as I have made new friends running up to the performance. What is the coolest thing about your character? I would say as a Jet girl we always need to act “cool.” All the Jet girls are flirtatious which is exciting! The era in which the play is set is a very interesting period - it is set in the 1960’s and it fascinates me to find out more about the style of dress and lifestyle. What made you want to take part in the school play? The auditions were held at the end of June last year and I always wanted to take part in a production like this. Being part of the play is very exciting and I had a great fun with my friends last year during the Les Misérables production. I really love drama and I am doing it for GCSE so this play would help with coursework. I also want to take part in West Side Story as I have not danced since I was 5 years old and I knew this would be a good way to start again. I have multiple dance scenes and they are all great fun! How has Mrs Murray inspired you as a dance teacher? Mrs Murray is a fabulous dancer and a great teacher. I didn't realise she has such a talent until rehearsals began. Mrs Murray’s words of encouragement inspired me to become a better dancer. I remember her saying to me, “You should join the senior dance team.” I answered with “I can’t dance!” She replied with: “Jessica if you couldn't dance I wouldn't be putting you in the front row!” These words gave me the confidence to take my place on stage.
