MESSAGE FROM MRS. TURNBULL
The first term of the school year has been an exciting
one at McKay School, and the next few weeks will
continue in the same way! Our Grade 5 students will
have their DARE Graduation on December 2nd and our
Breakfast Club and Christmas Toy Drive is happening
on Friday, December 4th. Classes are busy rehearsing for
our Christmas Concert which is going to be held on
December 10 at 6:00 in the evening, followed the next
day by our annual Will Stroet concert! This year, we are
very excited to have our Grade 6 and 7 Band perform for
us at 10:30 in the morning on December 16th. If you are
able to take the time to come out and listen, you will be
in for a real treat! Mr. Day has been working hard with
our very enthusiastic band students and is coming up
with some exciting results! Yes, it is an exciting time of
year for everyone, and McKay is no exception!
We hope to see all families out for our Christmas concert
as all of our students will be performing. This is always
a community building evening and I encourage you to
make time for it in your busy schedules!
PAC MEETING
Our next PAC meeting will be held on Monday,
December 7th at 7:30 in the evening. Our PAC continues
to work hard on its many fund raising events and we are
grateful for all the support we get from them. Please try
to come out to the meeting as your help can always be
used in one of many ways!
FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT
Our first Family Movie Night was held on Friday,
November 13th. The families enjoyed watching “Inside
Out” together and sharing popcorn, drinks and pizza! It
was a fun evening and the PAC raised well over $500.00
to be used for books, and equipment for McKay. The
next movie night will be held in the New Year and we
will give lots of reminders before that time!
EARLY WARNING
Please remember to call the Early Warning line,

your child arrives late, they must sign in at the office,
otherwise, they will be considered absent all day.
WHAT TO DO
What to do when your child is sick: Cold and Flu Season
is upon us and we are asking for your support to
maintain the health of all childen by keeping your child
home when they are ill. Their recovery will be sped up
when they have the opportunity to rest at home. A
proper sleep and breakfast are essential to ensure childen
function well at school. When should you keep your
•Fever over 38’ Centrigrade
•Diarrhea and/or vomiting
•A rash that has not yet been diagnosed
•Blister like sores that have not been diagnosed
•Cough, runny nose and sore throat.
If your child is at school with these symptoms, we will
call you to pick them up as they cannot work properly at
school, and they are spreading their illness to others.
Thank you so much for supporting McKay School in
keeping everyone healthy!
Also, please remember that it is the policy of both the
Richmond School District and Vancouver Coastal
Health that children should be kept home until they are
symptom free for 48 hours.
Please help us all keep McKay a healthy and happy
community!
VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT:
Our Grade 7 students had a great time at the Burnett
Volleyball Tournament held on November 18th. They
had the opportunity to play many of the schools who
feed into Burnett High School and our players displayed
the wonderful sportsmanship and team support for which
they are becoming well known! Thank you to Mr. Janz
and Mr. Shuto for all the time they give to coaching the
teams and preparing them for games and tournaments!
LATE FRENCH IMMERSION:
The teacher and students from the Grade 6 Late French
Immersion (LFI) class at Diefenbaker School was at
McKay to talk about their experiences in the program.
The information night for parents is on January 4th at
Diefenbaker School and it is for parents and students
who are currently in Grade 5. The LFI program begins in
Grade 6 and registration ends on the 15th of January,
which is earlier this year.
NEW CURRICULUM:
The new BC Curriculum is in the process of being
implemented and will be fully in use by September of
2016 in all elementary schools throughout BC. McKay is
fully engaged and recently, our Grade 2 class had the
parents in for a family activity morning where they
worked together on activities using the new curriculum
in math. They were given a provocation, which is a
question involving finding a way to search for a solution.
With a variety of manipulatives, all students and parents
together used the process of inquiry to find different
ways of solving the provocation question!
PRACTICUM STUDENTS:
McKay has recently hosted two students doing their
practicums. Ms Ashley Mol is doing her practicum in the
Faculty of Education at SFU and is placed in Mrs.
Trahey’s Grade ¾ class. Ms Cheryl Perry is doing her
practicum as an Educational Assistant from the DETAC
program in Delta. They will both be leaving after Friday,
November 27th, and we wish them well as they continue
with their studies. Ms Mol will be back at McKay in the
Spring to do her long practicum.
DIVISION 1 FUND RAISER:
Some of the students from Division 1 are having a Bake
Sale to raise money for underprivileged families at the
Christmas season. There will be more details coming out
soon so stay tuned! It is wonderful seeing the
community spirit which is exhibited by so many of our
students at McKay!
