Hill, Harold Buck, Dan Badders Foul Overview • Two types of Fouls in Lacrosse • Opposite of Basketball • Technical • Often Procedural • “Minor” • Personal • Usually SAFETY Related • “Major” 2 A Bit on Fouls • You can’t call what you don’t see • You don’t call fouls you hear • You don’t call fouls the coach says he saw • You don’t call fouls the players say they saw • You don’t have to call everything you do see 3 Penalties Team A commits a… …when Loose Ball …when Team A has the Ball Technical Foul “Play On”. If B does Blow whistle. not gain possession, Award ball to B. blow whistle, award ball to B “Flag Down”. Whistle when ball hits the ground. Team A serves a 30-second penalty. Team A serves one minute penalty. …when Team B has the Ball 4 Photo by David Seidman 5 Play on • Yell “Play on!” and give the play-on signal • If no clear advantage, kill play within 1 second. If offended team is likely to gain and maintain possession, allow it to go up to 3 seconds (normally) • If the offended team gets possession, point in the direction of play and indicate the offended team (e.g., “Blue ball!”) to signal the end of the play-on 6 Possession-change fouls • Short: “Loose … push … blue ball!” or even “Push … blue ball!” • Make call loud and clear, with big signals 7 Throwing the Flag • Flag means time-serving penalty. • Yell “Flag Down”. • Repeat *Color, Number, Foul* to yourself during flag down play. • MAKE THE CALL! – Even if your flag gets stuck – Even if you throw the flag and forget the number • Don’t be afraid to wave off a flag. 8 Important Ideas • Your most important job is protecting the safety of the players! • Lacrosse is a contact sport. • Football is a collision sport. • Checks are to dislodge the ball – Never to punish – Never to hurt – Never to “fire up the team” 9 Youth Rule Matrix Grades ---> 7+8 5+6 Controlled, BODY restricted contact CHECKS / Permitted to CONTACT dislodge ball / No only / No take-out or collision-style *(see notes take-out checks checks below) 2 Hands on stick / Gloved hand on 2 Hands on stick / STICK stick and/or stick LIFT+POKE only / CHECKING / contact / 90 ° 90 ° guideline SLASHING guideline Personal: Penalty Personal: Penalty Box; Technical: Box; Technical: PENALTIES Penalty Box or ball Penalty Box or ball turnover turnover 3+4 1+2 No contact except as described for ground balls and advancing the ball NO CONTACT 2 Hands on stick / LIFT+POKE only / 90 ° guideline 2 Hands on stick / LIFT+POKE only Personal: Penalty Box; Technical: Coaches Discretion Penalty Box or ball turnover We’ll get into more detail when we talk about the individual fouls. 10 Technical Fouls: Illegal Procedure • • • • • • • Starting before the whistle Leaving Restraining box on F/O Delay of Game Illegal Substitution Touching the ball with hand (except Goalie) Throwing the crosse Too many players You gotta read the book. 11 Technical Fouls: Crease Violations • Interfering with Goalie – Never inside the crease – Body is part of the crease if touching the crease – Stick may be played outside of crease if no possession • Offensive team cannot touch or run through • Player with possession cannot enter the crease 12 Technical Fouls: Holding • “Let ‘em run” • Can never use crosse to keep a player from moving • Can never hold or step on another players cross • Can disrupt movement and lift crosse within 5 yards of loose ball 13 Technical Fouls: Illegal Screen • Must be set – No moving picks • Legs together / Stick in close 14 Technical Fouls: Conduct Foul • • • • Players and coaches cannot ARGUE calls. Coaches cannot enter the field of play. Players and coaches cannot ARGUE calls. Players and coaches cannot gesture to express dissatisfaction with calls. • Players and coaches cannot ARGUE calls. – If you have to call Unsportsmanlike Conduct, it usually means you didn’t use your Conduct Foul. 15 Technical Fouls: Offside • • • • 4 players in the Defensive Zone 3 Players in the Offensive Zone The SAFETY of the players is you primary job If possible, count the players in front of you 16 Technical Fouls: Interference • Cannot play defense more than 5 yards from the ball • Warnings help here – “Guys, Cut it out” 17 Technical Fouls: Warding Off • Player with the ball cannot push with free hand. • Player with the ball cannot push with elbow, even if both hands are on the stick. • Players and coaches cannot ARGUE calls. • Player with the ball cannot drop the shoulder and drive over defenders 18 Technical Fouls: Withholding • • • • • Ball has to be made available for play Excessive Clamping Stuck in the back after faceoff “Chesting” “Thumbing” 19 Technical Fouls: Pushing • Not from behind • Not with the free hand • “Equal Pressure” on man with the ball Grades ---> 7+8 5+6 3+4 Controlled, BODY No contact except restricted contact CHECKS / Permitted to as described for CONTACT dislodge ball / No only / No take-out ground balls and or collision-style *(see notes take-out checks advancing the ball checks below) 1+2 NO CONTACT 20 Technical Fouls: The Nonsense Pushes • Pushing a player offsides – Is a push, not offsides • Pushing a player out of bounds – Is a push, not a turnover • Pushing a player into the crease – Is a goal, and a technical foul waved off by a goal 21 Personal Fouls: Cross-Check • Hand have to be together when pushing / checking • Don’t say “Illegal Cross-Check” unless you are reffing the Lumberjax. There is no such thing as a legal cross-check in field lacrosse. 22 Personal Fouls: Illegal Body check • From Behind • Above the shoulders – SPECIAL: Spearing – Non-releaseable • Below the waist • Player on the ground • More than 5-yards from the ball 23 Photo by Dave Adams 24 Personal Fouls: Illegal Equipment • Crosse – Pocket is too deep • Mouthpiece • Altered gloves 25 Personal Fouls: Tripping • Intentional Tripping with crosse • Intentional Tripping with feet • Contact Sport – Feet are going to get tangled • Blatant + Accidental = Hold 26 Personal Fouls: Unnecessary Roughness • “That was rough and it was not necessary” • Step-up from Illegal Body-check or Slash – U.R. is not a “just missed being legal” • “Blowing up the pick” • Punching Check 27 Personal Fouls: Slashing • A Slash is a stick check not allowed by rule Grades ---> STICK CHECKING / SLASHING 7+8 5+6 2 Hands on stick / Gloved hand on 2 Hands on stick / stick and/or stick LIFT+POKE only / contact / 90 ° 90 ° guideline guideline 3+4 1+2 2 Hands on stick / LIFT+POKE only / 90 ° guideline 2 Hands on stick / LIFT+POKE only • Stick Checks must always be under control – Be mindful of what is a check (stick as positioning guide) 28 Personal Fouls: Unsportsmanlike Conduct • Abusive/Argumentative behavior (NR) – Zero Tolerance for Abuse • Taunting (NR) • Profanity (NR) 29 Push v. Illegal Body-check? • We’re talking about a “hit” from behind • If the players are both standing still, it is probably a push. • If they are both running the about same speed, it is probably a push. • If one player is standing and the other is running, it’s probably an illegal bodycheck. • If the “hitter” lowers his shoulder, it’s an illegal bodycheck. 30 Signaling Penalties • Report Color, Number, Offense, Time, Explanation (restart/NR) (C-NOTE) 31
