Foul Overview
• Two types of Fouls in Lacrosse
• Opposite of Basketball
• Technical
• Often Procedural
• “Minor”
• Personal
• Usually SAFETY Related
• “Major”
2
A Bit on Fouls
• You can’t call what you don’t see
• You don’t call fouls you hear
• You don’t call fouls the coach says he saw
• You don’t call fouls the players say they saw
• You don’t have to call everything you do see

Play on
• Yell “Play on!” and give the play-on signal
• If no clear advantage, kill play within 1
second. If offended team is likely to gain
and maintain possession, allow it to go up
to 3 seconds (normally)
• If the offended team gets possession, point
in the direction of play and indicate the
offended team (e.g., “Blue ball!”) to signal
the end of the play-on
6
Possession-change fouls
• Short: “Loose … push … blue ball!” or
even “Push … blue ball!”
• Make call loud and clear, with big signals
7
Throwing the Flag
• Flag means time-serving penalty.
• Yell “Flag Down”.
• Repeat *Color, Number, Foul* to yourself
during flag down play.
• MAKE THE CALL!
– Even if your flag gets stuck
– Even if you throw the flag and forget the number
• Don’t be afraid to wave off a flag.
8
Important Ideas
• Your most important job is protecting the
safety of the players!
• Lacrosse is a contact sport.
• Football is a collision sport.
• Checks are to dislodge the ball
– Never to punish
– Never to hurt
– Never to “fire up the team”

Technical Fouls:
The Nonsense Pushes
• Pushing a player offsides
– Is a push, not offsides
• Pushing a player out of bounds
– Is a push, not a turnover
• Pushing a player into the crease
– Is a goal, and a technical foul waved off by a goal
21
Personal Fouls:
Cross-Check
• Hand have to be together when pushing /
checking
• Don’t say “Illegal Cross-Check” unless you
are reffing the Lumberjax. There is no such
thing as a legal cross-check in field lacrosse.
22
Personal Fouls:
Illegal Body check
• From Behind
• Above the shoulders
– SPECIAL: Spearing – Non-releaseable
• Below the waist
• Player on the ground

• “That was rough and it was not necessary”
• Step-up from Illegal Body-check or Slash
– U.R. is not a “just missed being legal”
• “Blowing up the pick”

29
Push v. Illegal Body-check?
• We’re talking about a “hit” from behind
• If the players are both standing still, it is
probably a push.
• If they are both running the about same speed,
it is probably a push.
• If one player is standing and the other is
running, it’s probably an illegal bodycheck.
• If the “hitter” lowers his shoulder, it’s an
illegal bodycheck.
30
Signaling Penalties
• Report Color, Number, Offense, Time,
Explanation (restart/NR) (C-NOTE)
