Recap of Events
SHPE Jr. at Amsterdam High School

Various Amsterdam High School students had a chance to zero in on the world of engineering Thursday morning
through the help of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Engineering Ambassadors. Eight RPI students visited the
high school to teach students from all four grades on four topics: the future of light, semiconductors, fuel cells,
and wind energy.

But aside from listening to presentations on engineering and participating in hands-on activities, the day was also
an important starting point for a new club that will soon make its way to Amsterdam High School. The RPI
chapter of the national Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers will soon be facilitating a junior chapter of
the society at the high school.

"(It's) to help all of our students, but especially our Hispanic students, become interested in science
and engineering," Stoya said, adding that the school was approached about the idea earlier in 2012.

By the end of the half-day Thursday, 75 students at the high school had signed up with interest in the coming
club.

Paulina Bukanowska, vice president of the RPI chapter who was recruiting students to join on Thursday, said it is a
great program and she is excited to bring it to the high school level. "It's just to kind of expose the students
to engineering because sometimes you don't realize that engineering is in your everyday life," she explained. But
the club will also help students to become interested in science, technology and math, as well, and will stress
the importance of graduating high school and going on to higher education.

"We talk about bringing relevance into the classroom, well it's even more powerful when it's brought by
someone that they can have more a personal connection with so it's been a real nice start to what I hope is a
relationship that continues to grow with RPI," Amsterdam High School Principal David Ziskin said.

SHPE Outreach

Outreach Weekend is geared in assisting
the Admissions Office and Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute in identifying and
recruiting prospective Hispanic students
into Rensselaer. Through programs and
activities developed by the staff, we hope
to advise and encourage Hispanic students
to pursue higher education in the fields of
engineering and science. Also, this serves
to initiate interest in SHPE, as well as in
other existing Rensselaer Outreach
Programs (STAR Weekend, etc.).
