Intervention Strategies - University of Newcastle

Intervention Strategies for RHD Candidates
Your progress will be monitored throughout your program of study. Annual and mid-year
progress reports are mechanisms for this, along with the confirmation process. Offer
conditions regarding required coursework or English language proficiency that are unmet
within set timeframes may raise concerns that lead the University to determine you are at risk
of not progressing. Additionally your supervisor and the Head of School may submit reports
on your progress to the Faculty Assistant Dean (Research Training) and Dean of Graduate
Studies at any time.
Where any concerns are identified an intervention strategy may be implemented. Strategies
for assisting students at risk could include, but are not limited to, the student:







attending academic skills programmes;
receiving individual case management;
attending counselling;
receiving assistance with personal issues which are influencing progress;
receiving mentoring;
being placed in a suitable coursework module; or
a combination of the above.
An intervention strategy may be activated by:



a letter to the student;
an approved extension to candidature;
personal contact with the student by a suitably authorised staff member (Office of
Graduate Studies, Head of School, research convenor, supervisor).
In certain circumstances conditions may be placed on your continued candidature. This may
be initiated by the Head of School, the Faculty Assistant Dean (Research Training), the Dean
of Graduate Studies or the Research Training Sub-Committee and constitutes an intervention
strategy.
Conditions may take the form of a more structured program of study with set goals and targets
with timelines against which they can be monitored. Failure to meet these set goals against
timelines may result in you being required to show-cause to the Research Training SubCommittee. Any formal conditions of candidature will be provided in writing and progress
monitoring meetings may take place with nominated people. If you are identified as being at
risk of not progressing you are expected apply yourself with a strong commitment to the
intervention strategy.
An intervention strategy must be implemented for International students at risk of not meeting
course progress requirements. Other students may also be subject to intervention strategies.
Where the Research Training Sub-Committee has received a recommendation that your
candidature be terminated, and before reaching a final decision, you will be given the
opportunity to make representation to the Committee both in writing and in person. This is the
show-cause process. The Committee will determine the outcome after reviewing all
information available including written and oral representations from you, your supervisor,
Head of School and/or Faculty Assistant Dean (Research Training).
