1. Dr. Seuss
Children learn a new language when they have sufficient exposure to it and they experience
the new language in meaningful situations which engage their attention. They need to see
that English is a normal means of communication, like their own language, and they will
begin to use it when they can… for some children It can take a while – with others they
take the risks and jump in the deep end with confidence.
First comes the understanding and then comes the confidence to speak.
Overall aims:



That the students are comfortable and dare to be risk takers. Students are curious
and want to learn, this is achieved by using topics of interest and varying activities
during lessons.
Encouraging students to speak as much English as often as possible. (I will often recast).
Building vocabulary. Within each topic the overall goal is that the student learns
new words and achieves large enough vocabulary within the topic to be able to
understand and speak simple sentences.
Skills:
Writing:
 Recognize and formulate simple sentences
 Work with small texts and pictures
Reading:
 Listen to stories in English of up to 10 minutes duration
 Reading simple texts and words in English
 Decode words based on their knowledge of Danish
Speaking:
 Learning vocabulary through many songs and rhymes
 Communicating in English when asking simple questions like “can I borrow…” or
“can I drink some water please”. “ Can I go to the toilet?”.
 Transfer very simple written texts into verbal communication.
 Capable of formulating simple sentences independently.


Display understanding of words from English in Prep Class; body parts, colours etc.
Being able to work with others in pairs or groups when practising new vocabulary.
Listening:
 Participate in activities and games where English is the language of instruction.
 Spontaneously interact with the teacher and others in English
 Show understanding of the language during Total Physical Response activities.
Grammar: Oral work
 Nouns: Understand the use of “s” – plural.
 Distinguish between he and she
 Prepositions: at, on, under, by, and behind, infront and so on.
Language:
 Know the difference between a consonant and a vowel
Drama:
 Role-plays.
Culture:
 Participate in English songs and rhymes.
 Knowledge of holidays in English speaking countries.
Work Routines:
The oral work is still weighted but the written work will increase during the year.
Every lesson starts with a 5 minute warm up talking session. Talking about what day it is
today, what day was it yesterday, what day is it tomorrow. What month it is, season,
weather and time.
English songs are used in the 1st Grade – the children love to sing, the rhythm makes them
remember new vocabulary and even shy and insecure students are willing participants. We
revise what was learnt last lesson, elaborate or go on to a new subject and then finish the
lesson with a quick action game or song. I also read many books aloud during English,
where the children’s listening and speaking skills are in focus. The stories I read are often
connected with the working unit at the time to re-enforce new vocabulary.
A usual lesson plan might be as follows:
1. A familiar song or language activity – warm up.
2. New language/ working in the text book “Incredible English”.
3. Craft activity connected with the new language – vocabulary or a written activity.
4. A song or rhyme connected with the new language.
5. Activities with Total Physical Response.
6. A story.
Classroom activities and teaching methods
During English the students work a lot in groups and in pairs as well as the whole class
together as one unit. The reason for an emphasis on group and pair work in particular is
that it activates everyone at the same time, and students feel more comfortable talking to a
few others rather than the whole class. In order to vary the English lessons and involve all
students, lessons will include the following teaching methods; Cl – Co Operative Learning,
Individual work, teacher presentation and class teaching, re-enacting scenes from stories
in Incredible English, making their own mini books, singing and more.
Materials
We will be using many different materials during the year:
 Textbook and activity book “Incredible English 1”.
 Photocopy activities from me.
 Songs
 Drama and theatre
 DVD and video
 Lots of art materials for craft exercises.
 Games
Evaluation
After each topic we evaluate. I will hear what the students have learned. Can they name
five animals, can they in pairs tell each other what food they like and which programs on
TV they enjoy? Portfolios (personal evaluation folders) are also used in English – this way
the student can look back on past work and then visually see their own progress.
When working in the textbook Incredible English – the students have a small test/ quiz
after each completed unit.
Homework
Uncompleted work during class will be given as homework.
There is also always oral homework.
I request that parents speak with their child about what the class has worked on in English
that day. If they know a new song – ask your child to sing it. Then afterwards talk about the
song and what it is about. If we are working on food – then talk about food you are eating
for dinner. Look in the activity book and class book and talk about the pages we have been
working on in class.
Revision and repetition is important.
Remember you are doing your child a big favour by encouraging your child to use the new
English vocabulary at home as well as in school.
 Remember to check ForældreIntra and the Incredible English
website every day and revise the English work.
http://www.oup.com/elt/global/products/incredibleenglish/?cc=global
Choose level 1 and then the unit and then stories or songs...

Listen and read English books on the following website: Oxford Owls.
http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/FindBook
Choose age group (start with ages 4-5). Then you choose a book and listen to it.
You can also turn of the volume and read it aloud alone. Do this twice a week.
