* How are the children
assessed?
* Teacher assessment is the main focus
at the end of KS1.
* Teachers base their judgements on a
broad range of evidence from across
the curriculum for each child, including
test scores
*Teachers need to made a judgement
for reading, writing, maths and science
OLD SYSTEM
* Children were given “levels”.
*Most children were a level 2 (2a, 2b,

standard
*Working AT the expected
standards
*Working at a GREATER DEPTH
within the expected standard

NEW SYSTEM For Test scores
* Depending on the number of
correct answers in the tests, the
children will be given a numerical
scaled score.
*The average score for a Year 2
child will be based on 100.
*Above 100 will be above average,
below 100 will be below average.
14 July 2017
* When do these
tests happen?
* Schools are required to administer
the tests in May.
*To ensure the testing process is
relaxed as possible, we will spread
the tests out over a number of
weeks.
*This will enable the children to sit
them in small groups.

interspersed between short sections of text
*PAPER 2 – will be a longer reader booklet with a separate
question and answer booklet
*BOTH papers must be administered.
*Tests are not strictly timed, but is expected that paper 1
should take no longer than 30 minutes; paper 3, 40
minutes

* WRITING

* WRITING
* Writing is continually assessed by the
teacher, using work produced in class.
*Teachers will make a judgement using a list of
strict criteria as to whether a child has met
the required standard.
*As well as being able to write in grammatical
sentences, accuracy of spelling, punctuation
and handwriting are all very important in
order to reach the standard.
14 July 2017
* Spelling, Punctuation and
Grammar
*Two papers will be administered
*PAPER 1 – spelling, 20 words
*PAPER 2 – focuses on pupils’ knowledge of
grammar, punctuation and vocabulary e.g circle
the noun in the sentence.
*Both tests should take about 20 minutes

* MATHS
14 July 2017
* MATHS
*
PAPER 1: tests children’s ability to solve
addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division sums; their knowledge of numbers
and counting; simple fractions (20
minutes)
*PAPER 2: consists of 5 aural questions then
written questions. It expects children to
solve problems involving all 4 operations
plus testing wider maths such as shape and
measurement. (45 minutes)
* What help can children have?
* In the reading test, children must read the text and
questions by themselves, but may have help recording
their answers, if this is done in a normal classroom
situation.
* In maths, teachers can read questions to any child who
asks. Some children will have the whole paper read to
them, on a one to one basis.
*Support resources are not allowed on the maths test this
year – children are expected to complete calculations
mentally or using a written method.
*Teachers can encourage, but not guide or say that an
answer is correct or incorrect.

* How can parents help?
* The best help is interest taken in learning and
progress.
* Attending meetings and parents evenings.
* Supporting homework, with specific focus on their
targets.
* Not putting children under too much pressure.
* Ensuring children attend school and arrive on time
every day
*What information do
parents get and when?
* Test papers are marked by teachers and scores used to
inform teacher assessment judgements
*Judgements are submitted to the Local Authority
*A percentage of schools are then moderated to check
judgements
*Parents are informed of teacher assessment judgements
within their child’s school report in July
