Report
There has been a plethora of late results this week in the Norfolk SRA Squash leagues but following this
week’s results it has become apparent that either East Anglia or East Anglia II will become Premier Division
champions and it is looking increasingly likely that Diss will be relegated. However the four other teams could
all finish anywhere from third to sixth in the table which should make for some exciting end of season matches.
East Anglia currently lead the table by four points and this week they beat Diss 20-4 who are in danger of being
cast adrift at the bottom. Richard Hunt and Paul Gretton both won their matches in straight games while Nigel
Gillick and John Cordeaux both won 3-1. The best match of the evening was the first string one where Dave
Gouldby just did enough to beat Neil Cross eventually winning 15-17 13-10 13-9 8-13 13-11. The second team
meanwhile were beating Broadland 20-2. Gary Snelling, Steve Mooney, Ian Douglas and Ashley Briggs all won
their matches in straight games with Briggs, who was county junior champion back in 2004, having a
particularly good 13-6 13-4 13-9 victory over Richard Millman. Two former county champions met in the first
string match and David Youngs came out on top against Ian Cox winning 13-9 9-13 20-18 9-13 13-11.
One player doesn’t make a team but the No.1 player in a squash team certainly helps. This was apparent this
week as Sportspark, who were without their regular No.1 Andy Trim for the first time, lost their unbeaten record
going down, with only four players, 16-10 to North Norfolk in Division One. Even so it was a close run thing
since, in addition to the walk-over Jason Gollaglee beat Phil Brookington 3-2 and in the match of the evening
captain Tim Perry just beat Eddie Webber 9-5 9-2 1-9 7-9 9-7. For Sportspark both Joe Plumridge and Richard
Fiske won their matches 3-1 against Peter Scott and Simon Watson respectively.
East Anglia III are still in with an outside chance of automatic promotion as they beat bottom of the table
Cromer 19-6 with Matt Johnson and Suzanne Scarlett both winning 3-0, Anthony Raywood winning 3-1 and
Nick Ross coming from behind to beat Henri Paul 3-2. For Cromer Richard Keeble played well to beat Hadleigh
Farrer 9-5 9-10 2-9 9-5 9-2 in the first string match. Barnham Broom II still have an outside chance of finishing
in the promotion play-offs following their 16-8 win over East Anglia IV. Adie Martin and Neil Sutton both won in

straight games while Peter Hubbard came from 0-2 down to beat Chris Butler 3-2. For East Anglia Jack Pearse
beat Adam Goodson 9-5 in the fifth and Paul Gretton beat Stuart Sutton 3-0.
In the top of the table match in Division Two Broadland II beat Bannatyne’s II 19-6. Rod Taylor who beat Jon
Bird 3-2 in the first string match was Bannatyne’s only winner while for Broadland Geoff Roper and Justin Miller
both won 3-0, Terry Mayes won 3-1 and Paul Banham beat Anthony Baines 3-2. Barnham Broom III are still
looking for their first win after losing 17-8 at home to Potters II. Richard Soanes came from behind to beat
Stuart Bowes 3-2 and David Cook also won 3-2, saving match ball in the third before beating Steve Slowick 4-9
2-9 10-9 9-5 9-5. Darren Green won 3-1 and Cliff High won in straight games while captain Paul English was
Barnham’s one winner.
There were no Division Three results but in Division Four Fakenham II had a 16-2 maximum against UEA
Ladies as Martin Dack and Steve Horn both won in straight games while Jono Lynn and Jason Smith won 3-1.
Broadland III also had a maximum, beating their ladies 16-3 with Geoff Roper, Mark Woolner and John Barker
all winning 3-1 and John Wright winning 3-0.
