General information about how Foundation training is organised:
Allocation process
Based on applicant scores during the national application
process and expressed order of preference of rotation North
West Thames Foundation School (NWTFS) allocates all
foundation doctors to a F1 post and a named F2 Trust prior to
the start of the Foundation Programme. Allocation to F2 post
occurs during the F1 year and is based on FPAS score and a
global assessment from their F1 FTPD.

Information events / NWTFS holds an annual Jobs fair for successful candidates to
Open
days
for come and speak to the Trusts about jobs. This is usually held
potential applicants

Foundation doctor
NW Thames Foundation School encourages foundation
forums
doctors to contribute to, and participate in various forums. At
school level there is F1 and F2 representation on the NWTFS
Management Committee. At a Health Education North West
London (HENWL) level, there is F1 and F2 representation at
appropriate committees and trainee forums (standard and
academic).
At local level, each employing trust has F1 and F2
representation on their Faculty Board. Additionally, there are
national forums conducted by UKFPO.
Educational and
An educational supervisor is allocated to each foundation

doctor for each year of their Foundation Programme to
maintain an overview of development and progress of the
doctor within the training programme.
Foundation trainees are allocated a clinical supervisor for
each four month post who will supervise the trainee in
consultation with the Programme Director. An educational
agreement will be completed at the initial interview of each
post. Mid-point reviews are recommended in each post.

Programme (TOFP)
Applications must be approved and signed by the local
Foundation Training Programme Director/Tutor and the
Foundation School Director
F2 outside the UK
NWTFS has an F2 exchange programme with Wellington,
New Zealand. This will be advertised and recruited to in
January each year.
Flexible training
(Less than full time)
Study leave
Inter Foundation
School Transfer
(IFST)
At present NWTFS does not support or accredit doctors who
wish to undertake their F2 year outside the UK, other than the
New Zealand exchange programme.
NWTFS’s policy for those who wish to undertake flexible
training can be found on our website.
Study leave is only permitted during the F2 year and is not
available during F1 except for ALS. Special arrangements
may be made for F1 doctors who wish to arrange career
“taster” sessions during the last four months of their F1 year.

Employment Information
Induction/shadowing
HENWL Trainees must attend a paid period of 4 days
induction/preparation for practice prior to starting F1.
HEEoE Trusts (Watford): Trainees have to attend a mandatory
preparation for practice week, including induction and
shadowing activity. Trainees are paid for attending.
