Task – The Duck Hunters
The Scenario
There are 10 fraternity brothers at a shooting gallery at the State Fair. Each brother is a perfect shot, meaning that they never miss
the target they are aiming at. Ten cardboard ducks appear simultaneously, and each shooter picks one of the ten ducks at random,
takes one shot, and hits his target.
a) Design and carry out a simulation to estimate the number of ducks hit.
 Use the four step process: State, Plan, Do, Conclude
 Run 50 Trials
b) From your simulation results, estimate the average number of ducks that are hit.
c) From your simulation, find the probability that more than half of the ducks get hit.
d) Suppose that 10 more perfect shooters join the fun so that there are 20 shooters.
 What do you think will happen to the values you estimated in parts b and c?
 Design a simulation that would give you the results of having 20 shooters.
Final Product
o Facilitator will add your team results to the Giant Class Duck Hunt Dot Plot.
 Assign each dot a value of 5!!
o As a group, organize your final results from b & c on a sheet of paper.
 Please summarize, do not create another dot plot by hand!!
 Once the entire class has added their values to the Giant Dot Plot, recalculate parts b & c above.
 Add two comments that compare the class results with your team results…turn paper in to instructor.
