Dryden Central School District Athletic Philosophy
Athletics is an integral part of a student’s education. It has an obligation/goal of developing skills
that will enable our young women and men to be successful in life. Skills such as leadership,
teamwork, character, poise, discipline, loyalty, mental toughness, physical conditioning, hard work
and school pride are not only by-products of participation in our program but also a shared vision by
our coaching staff and Board of Education. A majority of Dryden students participate in
interscholastic athletics whether it is playing, managing, taking pictures, etc... Dryden has
traditionally boasted its share of championship teams and all-star players. However, such measures
of success are the outcome, rather than the primary goal, of the athletic program.
Philosophy by Sport Level
Varsity Teams
At all levels of high school competition, athletes are expected to display desire, dedication and
commitment to excellence. This concept is compounded at the Varsity level. Preparing to win,
striving for victory in each contest and working to reach full group and individual potential are
worthy goals for high school students and teams. To achieve these goals, an athlete must be prepared
to make a substantial commitment, which may involve contests or practices six days a week, on
holidays and during vacations. Such a commitment demands much of the student and his/her
family.
The number of participants on a team is determined by several factors; available playing space
and time, student skill level, number and variety of players needed to conduct an effective practice or
to play effectively in a contest. In determining which and how many students will participate on a
team, coaches consider both benefit to the individual and needs of the group, keeping in mind that
each member of the team must have a defined, meaningful role which he or she understands.
2
Varsity athletes must display a sound attitude, an advanced skill level and a willingness to
make the personal commitment of time and energy for that level of competition. While the goal of
personal development is important, varsity competition can best be achieved when all strive together
to excel and win. As a result, squad size may be limited. Players are expected to understand that the
selection to the team and playing time depend on the coach’s judgment about how best to balance the
individual’s skills and role with the goals and needs of the team. Coaches strive to give all
participants playing time, but it is not guaranteed.
Modified/Junior Varsity Teams
Junior varsity competition is intended for those with potential to be varsity performers and for
those whose ability is not yet of varsity caliber. With an eye to preparing for varsity play,
participation at this level requires significant time and commitment and more of both than at the
Modified level. Coaches emphasize conditioning, skill refinement and the elements, and strategies of
team play, attempting to balance individual development, team development and the demands of
successful competition. A team member may expect some playing time over a season, but a specific
amount is not guaranteed.
Guidelines for Athletic Participation
Academic Priority
An athlete’s first obligation at Dryden is to his/her academics. The Athletic Code of Conduct details
the Academic Eligibility Policy and our coaching staff is here to assist the students in reaching their
academic goals.
Academic Eligibility
Failing 1 subject If a student is failing 1 subject at the end of the marking period, they will be
placed on probation and will work with their coach on an improvement plan. The student may
practice and play during this probationary period. Periodic communication with the studentathlete’s teacher is recommended.
Failing 2 or 3 subjects If a student is failing 2 or 3 subjects the athlete may practice but may
not participate in contests for a period of two weeks. Most communication concerning athletes on
academic probation will be done electronically. It will be initiated by the Athletic Office every two
weeks. If at the end of one of the two week intervals, the student is passing, they are deemed eligible
to play in contests for the next two weeks. This process continues for the remainder of the marking
period.
Failing 4 or more subjects If a student is failing 4 or more subjects a meeting will be held with
the athlete, parent, coach and Athletic Director to assess a “game plan”. This game plan may include
anything from replicating the present process (for failing 2-3 subjects) to dismissal from the team.
Attendance
Academics are top priority and good attendance is crucial to academic success. Illegal tardiness or
absences from school can result in disciplinary actions which range from reprimand to dismissal from
the team.
3
To participate in practice/games on any given day, an athlete must be in school the entire day. The
exception is to be legally excused for reasons other than illness. All excuses must be brought in and
approved by administration in order for that athlete to participate that day.
Players are expected to be on time to games/practices; players reporting late to a game/practice
without an acceptable excuse are subject to coach’s discipline policy.
Team members who participated in any evening contest, which is followed by a school day, are
expected to be present for the start of school the following day. Any irregular attendance developing
after evening contests will be investigated and appropriate action taken.
Discipline
Any student athlete who received an In-School Suspension or Out-Of-School Suspension will not be
permitted to compete in the next contest or practice that day.
Conduct
Spectator Conduct at Events
The school encourages parents to share in their child’s athletic experience by attending games and
showing positive, constructive support. The Dryden Athletic Department has worked hard to
improve the sportsmanship and behavior of our athletes and coaches on the field. It is important
that, as adults, we help by setting an example. Parents are role models for their children. The
following are the spectator guidelines set by Dryden.





Conform to accepted standards of good sportsmanlike behavior. Respect officials,
coaches and players and extend all courtesies to them.
Refrain from disrespectful remarks and the use of noisemakers.
Be quiet when players need total concentration, such as a free-throw in basketball or a
serve in volleyball.
Obey the regulations of the building and grounds.
Please do not approach a coach during or after a game with a problem. Make an
appointment to meet with the coach or AD the following day.
We encourage good sportsmanship at every level from coach, player, student body and adult fans.
We ask that all spectators conduct themselves in such a manner. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be
tolerated.
Those who do not conform should be brought to the attention of the building authorities. Understand
that the schools are responsible for the conduct of their respective spectator, whether at home or
away.
Conduct of Athletes
It is expected that all student- athletes conduct themselves on and off the field/court in a manner
which will reflect positively on their team, school and selves. Respect others; teachers, teammates,
opponents, coaches and officials. Disrespect towards any official will not be tolerated.
* Refer to the Athletic Code of Conduct for a full list of behavior expectations and disciplinary actions
for violations.
4
Sportsmanlike Behavior Policy
Dryden has a sportsmanlike behavior policy that affects all students and athletes.

If an athlete is expelled from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct, that athlete will be
suspended for the remainder of that game and the following game.
 If the athlete is expelled from a second game in that season, he or she will be suspended
for the remainder of that sport season.
The administration reserves the right to impose additional sanctions if the situation warrants.
Procedure if there is problem
If, at any time, there is a problem with your child concerning his or her athletic participation, I would
first encourage the athlete to speak directly with the coach at the appropriate time. If the parent has a
question, the athletic staff welcomes the opportunity to talk at an appropriate time. Conversations on
a playing field or in a gym are often incomplete and fragmented. All concerns deserve both privacy
and time. If after having a conversation with the coach you continue to have a concern, please see the
Athletic Director.
Practice
All athletes will be expected to attend practice every day after school. Practice usually starts at
3:15pm.
 Where should athletes stay after school until practice time?
 All athletes are expected to stay under supervision in the large cafeteria, if not staying with
a teacher. This is during activity period (2:24-3:00).
 Wandering the halls is not allowed – during activity period there will be students making
up tests, homework or getting extra help - wandering students cause disruptions.
 Are all practices held at the High/Middle School? No:
 JV and Varsity Baseball teams will practice at Dryden Elementary.
 Lacrosse will practice at DES first few weeks of season, then move to the HS.
 A bus will leave from the Middle School entrance at 3:05 for those athletes going to DES.
Weekend Practice
 Will there be weekend practices?
 Teams do practice on Saturdays and all athletes are expected to attend.
 Practice times will be scheduled in the mornings and finished before noon.
 Teams will not be asked to practice on Sundays (exceptions are granted by the
Superintendent).
 As the season gets underway – some coaches may drop weekend practice. This will be
at the discretion of the coach.
 Drop off and pick up will be at the Middle School entrance at the lion.
5
Cancellations
 How will I know when practice is cancelled?
 Announcements of any cancellations will be made at the end of the school day so that all
athletes will be able to ride the bus home if needed.
 Parents should check the Athletic website – it will be updated with cancellations,
postponements and schedule changes as soon as the Athletic Director has confirmed the
change.
 Athletic Alert email list: Let us know if you would like to be included on our list of contacts
Transportation for away games
 Will there be transportation to and from away games?
Yes, transportation is arranged ahead of time by the Athletic Director a schedule will be
sent to all coaches for review.
 Where will busses pick up and drop off?
Students will leave on a team bus from the West side of the H.S. and will be dropped back
off at the same spot.
 Does my student have to ride the bus with their team?
 Yes, a player must ride the team bus to and from a game – unless prior arrangements have
been made with the Athletic Director.
 If a player wants to ride home with a parent/guardian – that parent/guardian must meet
with the coach and sign them out prior to leaving that game. Attendance is taken on the
bus it is the coach’s responsibility to know the whereabouts of every player.
 If a player wants to ride home with someone other than a parent/guardian – it must be
approved by the Athletic Director prior to game day. If not approved that player must ride
on the bus with their team.
What to bring to a game
 Players should come to all games prepared to play – with uniform, equipment and gear.
 Athletes are encouraged to bring water bottles – labeled with their name.
 For away games players may want to bring snacks or money for concessions.
 Depending on the weather – athletes may want warm clothes – especially track athletes who
do not compete for the entire meet.
 All athletes are responsible for their belongings – we discourage players from bringing
expensive items or large sums of money.
Late Pickups
 Please make every effort to let the coach know if you will be late picking your child up after
an event.
If your child does not carry a cell phone, it is a good idea to ask the coach for his/her cell
phone or contact # where you can leave a message.
 We strongly encourage parents/guardians to be on time, more than likely it has been a long
day for all and our coach’s would like to get home as quickly as they can.
 Encourage your athlete to stay in communication with and let you know when they can
expect to arrive at the school – unforeseen circumstances can easily throw the bus off
schedule.
 Again, if your child does not carry a cell phone - ask them if they can use a friend’s cell or
their coach’s cell.
