Not Funded 2010: RUPP, N. G., The Role of Homework on Student Learning Outcomes: Evidence from a Field Experiment, Finding ways to improve student retention is especially important and timely since University ECU, Economics PhD, Appendix C Page 43 of North Carolina (UNC) system President Erskine Bowles has proposed tying all future university funding growth for the UNC system universities to freshman student retention benchmarks. We hope to learn from this study, among other things, whether homework assignment increases (or decreases) student retention. Principles of Microeconomics (Econ 2113) is a freshman/sophomore level class, hence it is these students that President Bowles is targeting to be retained. In addition to student retention, this study will shed light more broadly on student performance due to the assignment of homework beyond the Economics department. Given that every department at East Carolina educates students, this study on how homework affects student learning outcomes is of interest to every academic department at this university., Research Development Award. 2009: RUPP, N. G., Estimating Treatment Effects on Academic Success in the Classroom, This study will examine college student learning gains due to different pedagogical practices. Specifically, the researchers will attempt to quantify the benefits acquired by students from completing homework problem sets. The researchers will compare test performance for individuals required to turn in homework versus scores for those who are not required to complete the homework set. The caveat encountered by previous research in this area (Grodner and Grove, 2007) is that teachers have a reputation for assigning (or not assigning) homework. Hence students likely self-select into courses based on their homework preferences., College Research Award. 2008: RUPP, N. G., Do Carriers Internalize Congestion Costs? Empirical, Economists have long suggested overhauling the existing U.S. airport landing/departure fees to reflect market valuations of scarce runway capacity. Economists, however, do not agree on the optimal congestion-based pricing scheme. While some researchers advocate for a uniform congestion fee regardless of a carrier's airport market share, others suggest that airport tolls only reflect the congestion costs imposed on other carriers. This project will use ten years of ontime performance data to empirically determine if carriers internalize congestion costs. Preliminary results suggest that the answer to the internalization question depends upon the flight delay measure used since highly concentrated airports have shorter excess travel times, while the converse holds for departure and arrival delays., ECU - College Research Award. c.
