Think Again Perth Heat win over the Melbourne Aces. With several key pieces back like CoreyAdamson and Luke Hughes it was a familiar face of right hander Jack Frawley (1-1) that was the story. The Heat had turned to Mike Ekstrom in the first two rounds of action as their #1 starter but Ekstrom threw 31 pitches getting the win in relief for Canberra on loan for the Asia Series Wednesday night. Heat skipper Steve Fish had to juggle his rotation moving Ekstrom to Sunday and sent the Ohio native Frawley to the mound in the series opener. Frawley delivered with a complete game effort for the Heat pressed into the series opening role. "I got excited when they told me I just tried to relax and throw strikes and it was good to get a win tonight and we will try to get two more this weekend," said Frawley on being pressed into action early in the series. The Aces got the upper hand early before Frawley found his groove. Melbourne jumped on the Heat 1-0 in the second manufacturing an early 1-0 lead. Darryl George and Jarryd Rogers singled on back to back at bats off of Frawely to put runners at first and third. Ben Leslie then would bounce into a fielder's choice to score George for Melbourne. The Aces did not nickel and dime their next run in the third when Ryan Casteel hit a bomb to left field to make it 2-0 and his first dinger of the year. The Heat finally touched Melbourne starter John Hussey (0-3) in the home half of the third picking up a run on an error on a Matt Kennelly ground ball to first that Aces first baseman Rodgers could not pick clean that scored Brandon Tripp who singled earlier in the inning. The Heat actually had a chance earlier in the inning when Tripp singled and but the Aces gunned down Tucker Nathans at the plate who reached on another Aces error by second baseman Justin Trapp. Frawley and Hussey each traded 1-2-3 innings in the 4th and the Heat got a "strike em out throw em out" double play to end the top of the 5th to take the two clubs to the bottom of the 5th . The Heat then broke through and took the lead when 17-year old Sam Kennelly tied the game knocking in brother Matt Kennelly with an RBI single. "It is good to get back out there again with the guys after being in Port Hedland last week and it is good to be come back to the home crowd and come out with a big hit," said Sam Kennelly. Joey Wong then laced a pitch to right to put runners at the corners then Sam Kennelly brought the first run home. The beat continued with Jesse Barron driving in the go ahead run to make it 3-2 Heat with runners at the first and second. That chased Hussey as Aces skipper Phil Dale summoned Brett Zawacki for Melbourne. Alex Stuart laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up a step. CoreyAdamson in his first game for the Heat this season knocked in Kennelly to add another Heat run at 4-2. The Heat closed out the scoring when a Luke Hughes ground ball was dropped by third baseman Jared Schlehuber for a the third Aces error to tack on another run for the Heat at 5-2. Melbourne made five errors in the ball game. converted by Web2PDFConvert.com Frawley followed with a shutdown inning retiring the Aces 1-2-3 one of four times in the game in the top of the 7th and would finish setting down the last 11 of 12 he faced including 11 in a row. "It felt pretty good I got in a little groove after the first couple of innings and Matt Kennelly just carried me the rest of the way," said Frawley. The Heat added some insurance with Barron leading off with a single off of Aces reliever Toshihiro Iwao who began the inning for the Melbourne. Adamson doubled picking up his second hit of the night to put runners at second and third with one out. Nathans hit a chopper to Brad Harman at short that sent Barron racing home and beating out the throw to add another run. Luke Hughes followed with a sac fly to finish out the scoring for the Heat at 7-2. The Heat got a huge boost with the return of the key pieces in Adamson and Hughes while Frawley was doing his part to contribute. "We got a couple of guys back this week. It was obviously great to get Hughsey back and CoreyAdamson and there was definitely a little buzz in the locker room today," said Frawley. Sam Kennelly added "They are a big difference they are probably two of our biggest leaders on the team and to have them back in the lineup and back in the dugout it definitely lifts the team up a little bit more." Frawley tossed his second complete game but his first 9.0 IP variety after locking in for the Heat after the 3rd. Frawley threw 101 pitches in the win to even up his record at (1-1) with a final line of 9.0IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB and 5SO in the complete game gem. Hussey was tagged with the loss for Melbourne dropping his record to (0-3) The two teams will play game two of the three game series Saturday at Barbagallo Ballpark at 7:20 P.M.
