BADMINTON RULES:
Court Boundaries
Singles
 This is a long thin court (indicated in grey) with the side tramline
(indicated in white) being out
areas
When serving the shuttle must be delivered to the opposite diagonal
and must go past the front service line
box
Doubles
 This is the full court (indicated in grey)
 When serving the shuttle must be delivered to the opposite
diagonal box
 When serving the shuttle must go past the front service line but not
the first of the 2 lines at the back of the court
past
 Once the serve has been delivered, the whole court area is “in”
Scoring
Singles
 After each rally a point is scored
 You keep serving until you lose a rally, when the serve will go over to your opponent.
 You serve from the left if your score is odd. You serve from the Right if your score is even
 A set of badminton is completed when one player reaches 21 points
 If the score reaches 20-20, then the first player to gain a two point lead wins (e.g 25-23)
 If you reach 29-29 then the winner of the next point wins the set.
Doubles
Doubles scoring follows the same basic principles as singles scoring with a couple of additional points to remember.
 There is only one serve - if you lose a rally then the serve will still go over to your opponents.
 When a side wins a point and are serving, the players change sides with the same person continuing to serve.
 When a side wins a point and regains the serve, players do not change sides. If the score is odd the person on the left
serves and if the score is even the person on the right serves.
Serving
 The feet should be within the service box from which you are serving. This means you cannot have your feet on the
lines that form the boundary of the service box.
 Part of both feet must be on the ground and stationary throughout the serve.
 The receiver must stand within their service box and not move until the server has struck the shuttle.
 The backswing and follow through must be one continuous movement. This means there should be no “double motions”
or pause at the end of the backswing.
 At the point the shuttle is struck the racket should be pointing in a downward direction.
 At the point of being struck the shuttle should be below the waist (defined as the lowest rib).

There will only be “swing & miss” strikes – foul balls will not be counted as strikes. Three swings
and misses and the batter is out.
The pitcher will pitch the ball underhand and the back stop will catch it and place it on the tee for
the batter to hit. Please ensure the backstop is at a safe distance before the ball is struck at.
A ball is deemed “dead” if it does not roll more than 1 metre following a mis-hit. The
child gets another chance to hit. Base runners cannot advance on a “dead ball” This does not
count as a strike
Following a hit, once control of the ball has been placed back on the tee or caught on a base,
play stops and the next batter get ready to hit.
No score is taken as the focus is on participation, not competition.
Parents, Coaches & Teachers Guidelines
Make an effort to understand the rules of the game. The game is more enjoyable when you
understand it better.
Avoid pressuring your child about winning or losing, help to focus on the process of participation,
not the outcome (i.e. How did you do? Not did you win?)
Applaud and appreciate good play from either side.
Emphasise enjoyment, provide encouragement and always support your teams and child’s
performance.
