We have great news to share
with you and your students!
Our new major in game design was recently approved
by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education and
we are now accepting applications for fall 2013!
Fitchburg State is proud to be the only public university in New England to offer a bachelor’s degree in game design. Up
until now, degrees in game design and development had been located solely in private schools, where annual tuition and
fees range from $30,000 to $43,800, compared to Fitchburg State’s $8,710 (for Massachusetts residents) and $14,790 (for
out-of-state residents.) Pending final approval in May 2013,
residents of Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode
Island will qualify for a discounted tuition through the New
“The video game industry is well established
England Regional Student Program since their home state public
in Massachusetts, with dozens of game
universities do not offer majors in game design. This would bring
the annual tuition and fees to $9,195 for students from these
studios operating in the commonwealth,”
four New England states.
Fitchburg State President Robert V.
Antonucci said. “Even in the midst of
economic difficulties, the video game
industry, in New England and nationwide,
continues to grow and to search for talented
and well-prepared applicants. With this new
major, Fitchburg State reinforces its spirit
of innovation and an emphasis on preparing
students for rewarding careers.”
Game design will be part of our heralded Communications
Media Department, and is designed as a multidisciplinary
program that will prepare graduates for employment in the
thriving game design sector. A unique feature of Fitchburg
State’s game design program is a required one-semester
12-credit-hour internship. Internships have been a hallmark
of the university’s communications media program for
years, providing practical experience cited by students—and
employers—as one of the key distinguishing elements of a
Fitchburg State education.
NEW: Bachelor’s degree in
game design
Our location in North Central Massachusetts is perfect for
students interested in studying game design. Massachusetts
has one of the largest digital game sectors in the United States,
representing a $2 billion industry employing approximately
4,000 people across the state. Also, the recently founded
Massachusetts Digital Games Institute (MassDiGI), a statewide center aimed at fostering the growth of the local game
industry and innovation economy in Massachusetts, is located in
Worcester. On campus, the appetite for game design is high and has been fueled by the highly successful GameCon event,
which for six years has brought hundreds of students together on campus for a daylong game competition and discussion of
the latest technology.
This fall, we will be enrolling 32 students as members of the first class of game design majors. Our priority application
deadline for students interested in majoring in game design is February 1; however, we will continue to review applications
until we have reached our capacity in the program.
