Goalkeeper possession

When is the ball no longer playable by
the attacker?
GK is considered in possession when:
§  Ball is held with both hands
§  Held by trapping between one hand (even one
finger) and any surface (ground, goalpost, GK’s
body)
§  Holding the ball in outstretched open palm
For purposes of determining GK possession,
“hand” includes contact with any part of the
GK’s arm from fingertip to shoulder
Possession is maintained when:
§  Held as described above
§  Bouncing ball on ground
§  Throwing ball into the air
§ 
§ 
§ 
While ball is in possession of GK – it may not
be challenged for by an opponent in any
manner
An opponent who attempts to challenge for
ball in possession of GK has committed a direct
free kick foul (unfair charge)
A ball controlled by the GK using means other
than the hands (i.e. the feet) is open to
challenge

Consider age and skill level of players when
evaluating GK possession
Err on the side of safety
§

Opponent may not interfere with or block GK
release of ball into play
May not block GK movement while he is
holding the ball
May not hinder, interfere with, or block GK
throwing or punting ball back into play
Opponent who attempts to kick the ball when
the GK is in the process of kicking is penalized
for dangerous play
