Cisco VPN Client Installation Guide - Windows
1.
Create a folder on your hard drive named C:\CiscoVPN
2.
Download the Cisco VPN Client software and the configuration file to
C:\CiscoVPN

Run the VPN client software by double clicking on it.

Extract/Unzip the file to C:\CiscoVPN

Go to the location where you extracted the files (e.g. C:\CiscoVPN) and
double click the installer vpnclient_setup installer package
6.
On the following screen click Next to proceed with the installation.

Read though the Cisco License Agreement. To proceed, select “I Accept the
license agreement” and click Next
8.
Select the destination folder for the software. If you wish to change the
destination folder click Browse and select a folder or accept the default
(C:\Program Files\ Cisco Systems\VPN Client).Click Next
9.
Click Next again and the VPN Client will continue loading and validating
10.
On the following screen click Finish

The installer will recommend that the computer be restarted. Click the Yes
button to allow the computer to restart.

When rebooted, start the VPN Client from Start/Programs/Cisco Systems
VPN Client

Click Import and select the VPN Client configuration file “AstonVPN.pcf” in
C:\CiscoVPN
14.
You will see the following screen after the system imports the VPN
configuration file

To connect to the Aston VPN server, click Connect.

You will be prompted for your username and a password. Please provide your
UNIX username and password.
17.
If successful, you should see a padlock shaped icon in your system tray.
You should now be able to connect to resources inside the AstonIP network..

Access to off-campus IT services is in general not possible unless they are
web based. In order to access off-campus web services, the web browser will
have to be configured to use the proxy server configuration script. The URL
is,
http://www.aston.ac.uk/proxies/internal.pac

To disconnect, right click on the connection entry (the padlock icon) and
select the Disconnect option.
Remote Desktop
To get remote access to your PC at work you will need to do the following on your
work/office PC:

Computer name of your office PC that you want access (on campus)
To get this information right click on your “My Computer” icon on your
desktop. Select “Properties” and you will get a System Properties window.
Select the “Computer Name” tab. In this window please note the name that
appears in the “Full computer name” field. This is the name that you will need to
enter in to your remote desktop connection client (instructions shown on the next
page).

Make sure you have remote access permission configured on your PC. To get this
information you will have to contact your desktop support advisor from ISA (ring
helpdesk on 3445 if you are unsure).
On your PC/Laptop that is not on campus (i.e. home) please do the following after you
have successfully installed and connected to the VPN client.

Click on Start>Programs>Accessories and select Remote Desktop Connection
(as shown below, the instruction may vary slightly depending on the version of
Windows you have)
You will need to enter the name of the computer that you want remote connection in
the window shown below and click Connect. Once you have done this, you will get
the familiar screen of your computer at work. You have now access to your office
PC.
Please enter “campus\” before your username when logging onto your PC. i.e
campus\bloggs
