Migrating to vCloud Air with Double-Take Move
Installation and Deployment Guide
Migration of critical workloads can be a daunting task. This can be complex from a process perspective which
makes it even more challenging to migrate with minimal application downtime. Migrations to VMware’s vCloud Air
are made easy with Double-Take Move from Vision Solutions. Double-Take Move migrates your servers from
your on premises data center or from other cloud environments to the vCloud Air platform.
The remainder of this document provides a “quick start” overview to help install and deploy Double-Take Move for
Windows when migrating into vCloud Air.
Double-Take and Cloud platform planning considerations

Source OS edition supported for the target cloud platform:
o With the exception of data only jobs it is critical that the source and target OS match, at least the
major platform (x86/x64) and OS version (2008, 2008R2, 2012, 2012 R2).

Using directory service (Active Directory)
o When using directory services such as Active Directory, connectivity will be required from cloud to
ground. This would typically be handled by a VPN, though a determination of whether a point-tosite style solution such as OpenVPN or something more extensive like a site-to-site VPN will be
required based on the overall configuration and solution.
o Double-Take recommends at least a point-to-site VPN be in place for all servers being protected
into the cloud.

A site-to-site VPN is recommended for customers protecting multiple machines to ease
the work required to setup individual ground servers one at a time.

Connectivity requirements – partial or full production migration
o In case of a partial workload migration, connectivity to end users may continue to be provided by
the product site. In this case a dedicated link or VPN back to primary site may be all that is
needed.
o In the case of a full site migration where all workloads are transitioned into the cloud, broader
network changes may be needed. Considerations here could include possible changes that could
be needed to DNS registrations, system certificates and client access as examples.

Sufficient bandwidth / disk storage
o With Double-Take’s real time replication, an ideal scenario would provide sufficient bandwidth to
keep data in-sync with the cloud based target at all time. However, large bursts of data can be
“buffered” into system memory or to disk when insufficient bandwidth is available to move the data
out of the ground site quickly enough. See the Double-Take User’s Guide for more details on
planning for Double-Take queuing.

Double-Take Installation
1.
Download the latest Double-Take release to your local site. The latest release of Double-Take can be
obtained here. A download URL or valid customer account is required to complete this action. The DoubleTake install can alternatively be copied to the servers(s) using Remote Desktop, SSH, FTP, or other
standard remote copy options. Internet access from the vCloud machines is not required though the DoubleTake install can make use of internet connectivity if available to assist customers with licensing activation.
2.
Using the license keys you purchased to run the Double-Take installation package and select the
corresponding product during installation. Follow the instructions provided in the Double-Take Users Guide
to complete the installation of Double-Take and its configuration.
3.
Ensure that ground to cloud connectivity has been established and that your production server and your
cloud target are communicating. For Double-Take to work properly ports 6320, 6325, and 6326 (depending
on the product and functionality you are planning to utilize) must be able to fully communicate in both
directions. In a VPN scenario this is typically not an issue.
4.
Once your VPN is in place and Double-Take is installed on both your source and target servers, follow the
Double-Take User’s Guide for the migration model you wish to use. The User’s Guide will assist you in
getting your servers added to the Double-Take Console, verifying your license activations were successfully
completed and verifying that your servers are ready to be protected. Once the prior tasks are complete you
can then walk you through the setup of your actual job.
5.
Double-Take will stop the majority of services on the target. If there is a service or application that is
required to be available, such as the case of a software VPN like OpenVPN, users should review their job
settings and adjust Double-Take to leave these services running. Failure to do so will result in an immediate
loss of connectivity with the VPN on job startup.
6.
Finish the creation of your jobs, verify that synchronization completes successfully (depending on the
amount of data and available bandwidth this can take significant time to complete). Once in sync, then
follow any remaining guidance stated in the User’s Guide for the specific job type being used before cutting
over.
