To whom it may concern,
SCAM ALERT – iTUNES GIFT CARDS
You are receiving a copy of this letter because you are attempting to purchase a large quantity of iTunes prepaid gift
cards. There is a prominent scam being facilitated by fraudsters that you should be aware of prior to making this
purchase.
How the scam works:
Consumers receive a call or text message claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and that “back taxes”
are owed as the result of an audit. The payment must be made immediately to avoid a fine or charges. In many cases,
individuals are told they will be deported if the taxes are not paid right away. Consumers are instructed to purchase and
activate iTunes gift cards and provide the activation code(s) back to the fraudsters.
Please be advised that NO government office would make a request of this kind. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre asks
that you don’t make this purchase at this time. If you are on the phone to someone you have never met face to face and
who is requesting you make this purchase, HANG UP without mentioning this letter. If you have been threatened by the
person on the phone with arrest, deportation or seizure of property, please know you will not be arrested by Police.
Please DO NOT SEND any money or activation codes to the scammer. We recommend that you talk to the staff about
the requested transaction and notify local police. In addition you can call our centre toll free at 1-888-495-8501 or visit
our website at www.antifraudcentre.ca to file a report and obtain additional information on these types of scams.
