WHITE GOODS
h.
If the family wishes to have their old white goods taken away, the item must
be prepared for collection. Fridge/freezers and fridges must be fully
defrosted, and washing machines should be empty of personal items, and/or
free of water prior to collection.
i.
Identify the type of existing appliance – if an item needs replacing, referral
partners must always highlight the same product type (gas for gas, electric for
electric). Ensure that all existing pipework and electrical sockets are
fixed to the wall and in good condition and all connections are in reach of the
pipes and cables of the new appliance (no more than one metre away).
j.
In the case of gas cooker applications, please confirm there is a supply of
natural gas. (We are unable to connect a gas cooker where there is an
lPG or calor gas supply).* Full details are available in the Product Portfolio.
If there is an existing cooker in the home, the cooker applied for must have
the same connections (e.g. if the cooker that needs replacing is a gas
cooker, you can only apply for a gas cooker not an electric cooker).*

*A needs assessment will also be undertaken over the phone with the family, for them to prioritise the
most needed items. The priority is for children in the home who are under five years old. Please remember
to list all the items needed during the telephone application.
You must consider the following during the home visit for the items
needed, ensuring that:
a.
The family home has enough space and access is available for the
appliances/items.
b.
There are no health and safety concerns with any products applied for
(e.g. toys, bunk and single beds will only be used by children of the appropriate
age).
k.
You have provided the family applicant with a copy of the Information for
Families document, which gives them essential information about their
application and grant.
**Please note: If there is no gas appliance in place, the gas supply will have been capped by law. In these cases, an

application for a gas cooker can be made but Save the Children can only be responsible for the delivery (but not the
connection). An engineer can uncap the gas supply but all liability for the connection and after sales service will be the
responsibility of the applicant. Alternatively, an application for an electric cooker could be made, provided that the
appropriate dedicated electrical power source is available (cooker point with red on/off switch). Refer to our Product
Portfolio and Frequently asked Questions for further guidance.
