If you have a replacer that works well then use it. Protein molecules in cow’s milk are larger than the protein molecules in goats milk making is a little harder for the goat to digest but still very nutritious. Cow’s Milk is less expensive both in cost and in the treatments for enterotoxemia and lost kids. I buy my Cow’s Milk in 2 gallon packs at a restaurant supply store – Cash & Carry My kids grow at the same rate as dam fed kids and sometimes better. Bottle Baby Schedule: I feed every couple of hours for the first few days then 4 times a day, dropping to 3 times a day at 6 weeks, 2 times a day at 8 weeks, 1 time a day at 12 weeks with weaning completely by 16 weeks, hopefully. Every breeder has their very own way of the way they like to do things. How to Feed the Bottle Baby It’s important to feed kids as if they were feeding off mom, slightly stretched neck and elevated nose/mouth in a standing position. This alleviates the ‘beer’ belly that can come from holding kids while they’re being fed. Some breeders prefer to feed bottle babies from opposite sides of a fence to keep the distance and keep them from climbing all over the bottle bringer! Bottle Babies Still Need More Than Milk Although not much nutrition will be gotten from hay it’s still important to introduce, just like humans familiarity with the sight and smell of food will eventually lead to curiosity of tasting it! Having bottle babies with the herd or at least a “baby sitter” will help teach bottle babies how to eat hay and pellets, starting as early as 2nd day of life! Vaccinations/Supplements/Immune Boosters: Bose (Selenium/vit E prescription) 0.25-0.5ml SubQ (Some breeders now do orally) Paste is also available Bovi-Sera/Poly-Serum 2-3cc orally after birth (at least within 24 hours) CD Anti-Toxin 2-3cc orally if no goat colostrum is available of CD Vaccinated goat By 5 days (Krystal) gives CD Anti-Toxin Shot 5cc subq for full time/part time bottle kid First Arrival Paste (Protects against Diaherrea) Colostrum Gel – Can be given for first 3 days of life – Good for kids that did or did not receive colostrums from dam (or goat) Teaching Manners to the Young Mom-Less Kids Goat doe’s start teaching good manners early on with their kids. Bottle kids can become very annoying as they get older and larger. Most doe’s will nudge the belly of the kid when they are very young but as kids get older they use techniques such as a light push with the back leg or pulling to the side by the ear. Our Favorite is pulling to side by the ear with firm “No” and finger pointing With young bucklings that will remain bucks, Krystal has been known to use Cattle Prod at a very young age to keep the climbing, pushing, and acting bucky to a minimum. Very quickly, you just have to buzz, and the goats behavior corrects immediately PRESENTED BY: Michelle Sayer Krystal Clemmons BRC Boers Summitview Boers http://www.brcboers.com/ http://summitviewboers.homestead.com/
