Who changed Britain

Literacy
This term, we will begin by learning a
Greek Myth called Theseus, Ariadne
and the children of Athens. We will be
looking at the behaviour and attitudes
of the characters in the story before
innovating the text; turning it into a
playscript. In doing so, we will be
focussing on using speech adverbs and
stage directions that will help portray
each character accurately. Next, we
will be writing an explanation text
following our research into how
earthquakes and volcanoes occur,
focussing on the features of formal
writing; use of third person; temporal
and casual conjunctions, as well as the
use of technical language.
Maths
Personal, Social and
Emotional Development
This term we will begin by
identifying positive things
about ourselves, encouraging
each other to feel positive
about ourselves. We will be
reflecting on social issues to
help us understand other
people’s experiences. We will
be exploring the fact that
pressure can come from a
variety of sources, and begin
to develop ideas for dealing
with them. In addition, to
consider where we can get
help and support.
Topaz Class
Term 5
Our Topic is
Science
In Science this term, we will be
focussing on exploring different
forces. We will learn how to use a
force meter, measuring the force
acting on objects. We will look at the
discoveries of Isaac Newton to learn
about opposing forces. Then we will
learn about the effects of friction,
water resistance and air resistance
through a series of practical
experiments. Finally, we will use
scientific language to record our
tests and results.
This term in the lead up to our
SATs tests in Week 5, we will begin
revising our understanding of place
value, negative numbers and both
column addition and subtraction.
Next we will revise the methods of
short and long multiplication and
division. We will also use all four
operations to solve multi-step word
problems. Then we will revise our
understanding of how to calculate
areas and perimeter and missing
angles around a point, line or
vertically opposite in a triangle.
After our SATs, we will learn how
to solve problems using a calculator.
Finally, we will be solving logic and
visual puzzles and problems.
‘Who changed Britain?
The Greeks
Here are the areas of learning
that we will be focusing on
during Term 5 of this year. If
you would like to come in and
help, please come in and see
me!
Art/DT
In Art and DT this term we will be
exploring the geometric patterns
used in Ancient Greek pottery and
clothing, designing our own
versions. Through our research,
we will also be looking at the
architectural features of Greek
temples, as well as the statues and
features of public Stoas (a
covered walkway or portico,
commonly for public use). We will
use a variety of materials to
create our own replica models.
History
Our focus this term is Ancient
Greece. We will research a
child’s typical day in Athens and
consider their values and
priorities as a city-state. We will
also learn about the Classical
Greek alphabet and look at
manuscripts from the era. With
this being an Olympic year, we
will research what the original
Olympic Games were like and
discover facts about the Olympic
flame’s origins in Olympia
Physical Education
Music
Our music lessons this term will focus on
one song ‘Make you feel my love’ by
Adele, with an integrated approach to
music, where games and the different
areas of music (pulse, rhythm and pitch),
singing and playing instruments are all
linked. We will experiment with both
tuned and un-tuned instruments when
adding percussion to our performances.
This term our focus, in
preparation for our own mini
Olympic Games, will be
athletics. We will try a mixture
of activities, which feature in
the modern day games and
those from the original
Olympics. We will experiment
with different ways of
travelling, throwing and
jumping, increasing our
awareness of speed and
distance.
Religious Education
Our unit for this term is called Easter. We will be looking at all four accounts of the Resurrection, in particular the
differences and similarities between them. In addition, we will be discussing the story of Thomas, the disciple who
did not believe that he had risen until he saw it. We will relate this to Christians today, specifically, why they
believe in the Resurrection of Jesus and God’s promise of eternal life. During the final week of the term we will be
exploring the Unit called ‘Pentecost’. We will be learning the two stories about the coming of the Holy Spirit and
learning about the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit. We will also be learning a new prayer called ‘Regina Caeli’ – we
will learn both the English and Latin versions.
