EvaluationProcedure
Theprocessoutlinedbelowisaguidelinethathasbeen,andcontinuestobeusedbySouthCalgary
RingetteAssociation’s(SCRA)EvaluationsCommittee.Eachyear,SouthCalgaryRingettereviewsthe
processandmayimplementnewitemstofurtherenhancethequalityandconsistency.TheEvaluations
processmaybealteredperiodically,dependingonthenumberofplayerswithinanagegroup,inany
givenyear.TheEvaluationsprocesshascompletesupportoftheSCRABoard.
Purpose:
Playerevaluationsareessentialtotheformationofteamswithineachagegroup.The
committee’sultimatepurposeistoconductfair,impartialandindependentevaluationssothat
everyplayerisevaluatedundersimilarcircumstances/conditionswithintheiragegroup,and
placedonateamwithsimilarlyskilledpeers.
AllplayersmustparticipateintheEvaluationsprocess,intheirparticularagegroup,inordertobe
placedonateam.Tobeeffective,playersmustattendALLevaluationicetimesassigned.Failureto
attendanyassignedicetimes,withoutpriorexemption,mayhavesignificantimpactonthefinal

EvaluationsCommitteeandVolunteers:
TheSCRAEvaluationsCommitteeisledbytheoverallEvaluationsCoordinator,withAge
Coordinatorsforeachagedivision,ActiveStart,U10,U12,U14,U16andU19.Theroleofthe
Coordinatoristoremainneutralandimpartial,andtonotcomment,alterdata,ormodify
rankingsinanyway.ThecommitteereportstotheVPOperations.
AgegroupevaluatorswillconsistofAssociationparentswhovolunteerfromtheolderagegroup
oftheagegroupimmediatelyprecedingtheirplayers’agegroup.Forexample,

ParentsareNOTallowedtoevaluateanagegroupwheretheyhaveaplayer.Ifafamilyhas
playersintwosequentialagegroups,theywillevaluateadifferentagegroup,preferablydown
inAgegroup.
PlayersthatarecurrentlyregisteredwithSCRA,andexpecttobeplacedonateamforthe
upcomingringetteseasonarenotpermittedtoevaluateotherplayersinanyAgegroup.

EvaluationProcedure
EvaluationsProcessperAgeGroup
ThegoalforALLagegroupswithmultipleteams,withinanagegroup,istoproducebalanced
teamsasperRingetteAlbertaTieringPolicy4.4.4.X(dependingonagegroup).Workiscurrently
ongoingtoincludeUniversalAthleticAssessmentasacomponentwithinthetieringprocessfor
alllevelsU10throughU14whereUAAapplies.
Duringtheevaluationsgameplayprocess,theidealnumberofskaterspericetimeis26players
(13perside)–maxnumberofskatersis30,unlessthetotalnumberofplayersislessthan35,
whichnecessitatesputtingallplayersononeicetime.
ThetargetforteamsizewithinSCRAis13-15players.ForU14throughU19,aminimumof1
fulltimegoalieperteamisrequired.Teamsizeisdependentonanumberofitems.These
includeoverallskillofanagegroup,totalnumberofplayersregistered,numberoffulltime
goaliesavailable(U14-U19),numberofteamsdecidedonwhileadheringtotheRingetteAlberta
TieringPolicyandensuringcompetitiveequityoftheteamsagainstotherAssociations.These
decisionsaretheresponsibilityoftheEvaluationsCommittee,andwillbesupportedthrough
UniversalAssessmentdataandconsultationwithRingetteCalgaryandit’sAssociations.
UniversalAthleticAssessment(UAA)asprescribedbyRingetteAlberta,willbeusedastheinitial
rankingofplayerswithinanagegrouptoestablishthefirstgameplayassessment.TheUAA
scoreswillnotbeusedinassessingaplayers’overallevaluationranking.
Allgameplayassessmentwillbescored1through5(5-strongest,1-weakest)onspecific
parametersperagegroup.Theseparametersarelistedwithinthespecificagegroup
descriptionsbelow.
Playerswillberankedaftereachgameplayicetime.Theserankingswilldecideonwhich
subsequenticesessionaplayerwillattend.Dependingontherankings,playersmaymoveup
anddownwithintheoverallranking.
Tofurtherassessplayerswhoarerelativelycloseinscore,additionalgameplayassessmentswill
beusedtoallowplayersadditionalopportunitiestobeevaluatedtoprovideafinalranking.
FinalplacementofanyplayerisatthediscretionoftheAssociation,viatheEvaluations
Committee.

Goalies
GoalieswillbeevaluatedforagegroupsU12throughU19byindependentqualifiedevaluators.
Scoring:
Allgoalieswillbeassessedon:skatingability,movement&agility,positioningandeffort.
TeamPlacement:
Eachgoaliewillbeplacedwithateamwithintheiragegroupbasedontheirevaluationresults.
ForAgegroupswithmultipleteamsinthesamelevel,thestrongergoalieshouldbeplacedwith
theteamthathastheperceivedweakerdefense.
Afulltimegoaliewillholdtheprimarypositionofgoaltenderfortheirteam.Aplayerwho
evaluatedassuchandplacedontheequivalentteamwillnotbeallowedtodisplaceafull-time
goalieforanyreason.Anyparttimegoaliewillonlyplayasabackupgoaltender,andthe
positionisnottobeshared.
ActiveStart1&2
ActiveStart(AS)isadevelopmentalprogramfornewplayerswhoare5or6yearsofage.The
breakdownsintoAS1andAS2wereagreeduponbytheRingetteCalgaryAssociations,toensure
consistencyandcompetitiveanddevelopmentalstability.TheActiveStartgroupsmaybe
consolidateddependingonthenumberofplayersineachsubgroup,withintheAssociationsas
amajority.EG:IfAssociationseachhavelessthan6AS1players,adecisionacrossAssociations
willbemadetoconsolidatetheAS1andAS2programs.

SkatingabilityandringhandlingwillbeassessedIntheeventthattherewillbemorethanone
ActiveStartteam,therankingswillsimplybeusedtobalancetheteamsevenlybyskill
TeamFormation:
Forteamformation,friendrequestsareconsideredimportantattheActiveStartlevel.For
thesetosucceed,therequestsmustbereciprocal,andcanbesenttotheagegroupcoordinator
before,orduringtheevaluationprocess.Movesonceteamshavebeenannouncedwillonlybe
executeduponapprovalfromtheEvaluationsCoordinator.
U10StepProgram
TheU10StepProgramwasintroducedinthe2014-2015seasontopromotedevelopmentof
players,withinagroupofsimilarlyskilledplayerswithinastep.ThisispartoftheLongTerm
AthleteDevelopment(LTAD)goals,aswelltoensureconsistencyacrosstheprovince.Please
notethatthisisnotTiering.PlayersareplacedintoeachStepbasedonage,and#ofyears’
ringetteexperience.(Foreg.U10-3iscomprisedprimarilyofplayersage9with2-4years’
ringetteplayingtime)
Theevaluationsprocessforthisagegroupistoassessskating,ringetteskills,andoverallgame
play.
TheskillsassessmentisdeterminedbyRingetteAlberta’sUniversalAthleteAssessment(UAA)
policyaspartofoverallLongTermAthleteDevelopment(LTAD).TheUAAassessmentwillbe
carriedoutatthestartofevaluations,followedbygameplayassessment.

TheevaluationsforbothU12andU14areacombinationofskillsassessment,asdeterminedby
UAA,andgameplay.
TheUAAassessmentwillbecarriedoutatthestartofevaluations,followedbygameplay
assessment.TheresultsfromtheUAAskillsassessmentwillbeusedtorankplayersand
determinetheirstartingplaceforevaluationofgameplay.ThescoresfromUAAwillnotbe
usedinfinalrankingsoftheplayerswithinthegroup.
Gameplayassessmentfocusesonringhandling/control,aggressionandoverallgamesense.
Playerswillbeassessedover3–4icetimes.Gameplaywilluseprimarily5vs5play.

Theevaluationprocessforthesetwoagegroupswillbefocusedsolelyongameplay
assessment.Playerswillbeassessedaseither:forwardordefense.(Considerationofevaluating
thepositionofCentreiscurrentlybeingreviewed.
IceBreakdown:
Playerswillbeassessedover3-4icetimes.Dependingonthenumberofathletesattheage
group,playersmaymoveupand/ordownbetweentheAandBgroups,todeterminetheteams.
Gameplaywilluseacombinationof5v5,5v4,5v3,and4v4tomixuplines.
TeamFormation:
BothU16&U19playerswillultimatelybeplacedonanAorBteam,dependingonthe
numberofplayersregistered(and/orgoaliesavailable)andqualityofplayersatthe
outcomeoftheevaluationsprocess.
PlayersattheU19levelcanrequesttoplayonaBteam.Thisistoallowtheseathletes
todedicatetimetootheractivitiessuchasgraduations,jobs,schoolactivitiesand
sports.
SCRAwillagainbeusingaHeadCoachDraftattheU16&U19levels.Theheadcoaches
ofeachagegroupwillgetachancetoseethebottom3rankedplayersinAvstop3
rankedplayersinBtorecommend/choosewhichplayersplaceonAvsB.
Playercommitment,attitudeandoveralleffortwillbeconsidered,inadditiontothe
evaluationscores,duringthisselection.Preferencewillgoto2ndyearplayers(onbeing
placedontheAteam).SelectionwillbeconductedwiththeAgeCoordinator,Evaluation
Coordinator,andHCforA&Bwithineachagegroup.
Scoring:

PlayerInjury/Illnessexemption
Foranyplayerthatcan’tattendevaluationsduetoillness,injuryorfamilyemergency,anexemptionwill
needtoberequestedbeforeevaluationsbegin(wherepossible),viaemail,totheAgeCoordinatorfor
theplayers’Agegroup.RequestsduetoillnessandinjurymustbeaccompaniedwithaDoctor’s
verificationofinjury/illness(dateincurred,descriptionofinjury/illness,andprojectedrecoverytime).
EachrequestwillbereviewedbytheAgeCoordinator,EvaluationsCoordinator,VPOperationsandif
necessary,SCRAPresident.Placementonateamwillbethenbedeterminedbasedonthepriortwo
years’teamplacement,peerplacementand/orpreviouscoachcomments.
