Improved and Expanded Service Makes Recycling Easier in Incline

Improved and Expanded Service Makes
Recycling Easier in Incline Village
Have you noticed new Waste Management (WM) trash and recycling carts in your neighborhood? They are
part of the newly implemented Solid Waste Franchise Agreement between The Incline Village General
Improvement District (IVGID) and Waste Management, approved by the Board of Trustees on July 7, 2016.
Along with standardized recycling containers to replace the blue plastic bags residents have
used in the past, recycling collection will now happen on a weekly basis. Single Stream
Recycling is included in your collection rate and will create more space in your trash can. Loose
paper, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, glass bottles, glass jars, aluminum cans, steel cans,
plastics #1-7 (all hard plastics), cardboard and paperboard can all be put in your recycling cart.
Any containers or material soiled by food cannot be recycled and should be placed in the trash.
Wipe, scrape or rinse food from items before placing them in your recycling.
The updated Franchise also includes an increase from 72 to 96 stickers for yard waste collection. Curbside
yard waste collection has also been extended from 12 to 16 weeks, effective Spring 2017.

The increased volume will allow for an additional 100,000 bags of yard waste to be recycled annually.
Incline Village is the only service area in Nevada that has a curbside yard waste recycling program. In
2016 approximately 337 tons of materials were diverted from the landfill with this program.
Waste Management will also continue curbside collection of Christmas Trees that are free of
ornaments, tinsel, lights, flocking and stands. Trees should be cut into 3 foot sections.
Collection will take place the second week of January in 2017. This program is a community
collaboration between IVGID, WM and the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection Department
(NLTFPD). The trees chipped by NLTFPD are used in local erosion control projects which ensures
they are diverted from the landfill. Each year around 1,500 trees are chipped through this
collaboration.
Additional services also included in the updated Franchise include:
-
Customers will receive an allocation for four trips to the transfer station each year to get
rid of bulky items. A permission slip is available online for property owners who want to
share that option with their tenants (www.InclineVillage.wm.com)
-
Residents looking to upgrade to a wildlife resistant trash cart can now rent one through
Waste Management.
-
Yard service is free to qualified disabled and elderly customers.
-
Mail in SHARPS disposal containers are available for free at the Incline Village Transfer Station.
-
If you plan to leave town before your collection day, you can bring your weekly trash
allotment to the transfer station in-lieu of your normal curbside service at no additional
charge.
Only a Waste Management supplied container, a bear shed or an
approved bear cart will be accepted for solid waste collection. Trash goes
in the green WM cart. Single Stream Recycling should be placed in the
blue-lidded WM cart. Bear shed users can separate their recycling from
trash with a blue bag or clearly marked designated recycle can inside of
their shed. The changes will reduce attractants to wildlife and litter left
behind by scavengers feeding on trash.
The most notable change for residents will be their statement. Waste Management has taken over
billing from IVGID Public Works. Most customers will see a rate increase between 30 cents and $2.50
per month, but the charges will now be billed quarterly. For questions about service options and rates,
or to enroll in online billing go to www.InclineVillage.wm.com. For billing questions, email
[email protected] or call (775) 831-2971.
