Bannon Creek School
Family/School Handbook
2013-2014
“Whatever It Takes”
Dear Bannon Creek Students and Parents:
My name is Amreek Singh and I am the proud new principal of Bannon Creek
Elementary School. I am very excited about the 2013-2014 school year and on
behalf of our outstanding staff I would like to welcome all of you to the new school
year at Bannon Creek. We are looking forward to a great year filled with success
and accomplishments.
This parent /student handbook is a resource with information that will help you as
a parent to keep informed and to participate in the success of your children
attending Bannon Creek School. It is filled with information about school wide
procedures and policies, behavior expectations, positive rewards, and student
programs.
This year we will be focusing on providing extended academic support to our
students. We are going to have an extended day program that will address
academic needs in all grades. We will also use out Early Learning Intervention
Specialist to lead our Response to Intervention work in the 1st through 3rd grades.
We know, as parents, you are always looking for opportunities to contribute to
your child’s education. We are going to offer parent workshops and orientation
events to get parents to support your students at home with literacy activities.
I hope you are looking forward to the 2013-2014 school year with as much
enthusiasm as I am. We have a number of good things happening here at Bannon
Creek, so come by and visit us!
Go Beavers!

Vision
Bannon Creek students are empowered to successfully approach life’s transitions and challenges. We
envision a safe and inviting atmosphere that creates a sense of belonging. Positive, supportive interactions
among students, staff, families and the community create the feeling of an extended family. Everyone is a
valued member of the learning community and is motivated to be present each day. A nurturing environment
encourages students to take risks and develop self-confidence. Student successes and achievements are
frequently recognized and celebrated.
Our learning community uses state approved curriculum and technology to address academic
standards. Academic language and problem solving strategies are explicitly taught and reinforced to help
students develop higher order thinking skills and meet grade level benchmarks. Extending the curriculum
enables students to approach academic assessments with greater confidence, resulting in improved
performance. A system of prevention and intervention strategies is systematically utilized to address the
needs of all students.
Positive social skills are valued at Bannon Creek. Students take pride in exhibiting citizenship, respect,
and manners. As a result, cooperation, empathy, patience, and appreciation of differences are practiced and
celebrated. Positive role models and explicit instruction in desired behaviors are complemented by character
trait education programs.
Opportunities for students to take active leadership roles within the school abound. Upper grade
students mentor younger students through collaborative learning activities. Working cooperatively with the
school to support and enhance the learning environment, families assume leadership roles in their child’s
education. Our staff of caring professionals is encouraged to work as a team. Teachers collaborate within and
across grade levels to share strategies for student success. Together, students, families, and staff build a
safety net of support for each other. As we maximize our individual potentials, we can achieve our school
wide goals. In the spirit of teamwork and responsibility we foster at Bannon Creek, we do WHATEVER IT
TAKES!
Mission
Our Bannon Creek community believes that all children can learn. We do Whatever It Takes to nurture,
educate, and challenge our students. The academic progress of each learner is measured using district and
state assessments which are shared with families through ongoing communication. Interventions and
enrichment strategies are provided for students performing below and above grade level standards. Bannon
Creek fosters appreciation for learning and cultural diversity. It is our mission to empower students to
successfully approach life’s transitions and challenges.

handicapping their child's education.
 A Perfect Attendance Certificate will be given for each trimester
 Perfect Attendance = present everyday with no tardies
The State of California has set up certain requirements regarding attendance. Each student
and their parents are held responsible for meeting these requirements. The State requires
each student to be in school unless their absence is excused.
ABSENCES EXCUSED FOR JUSTIFIABLE REASONS: A student shall be excused from school for
justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, illness, medical or counseling
appointments, an appearance in court, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his/her
religion, attendance at religious retreats or an employment conference, when the pupil’s
absence has been requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE REVIEW BOARD (SARB)
One of the options listed on the student referral form is "Referral to SARB." The main
responsibility of the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) is to promote good school
attendance and behavior through the use of alternatives to the Juvenile Court system. This
process brings together parents, students, school personnel and community agencies to help
solve student attendance and/or behavior problems. The SARB coordinates community
services and designs remedies for students under school authority, or who are in danger of
becoming habitually truant, irregular in attendance, insubordinate, disorderly, or who have
exhausted the school's resources.
It is within the jurisdiction of SARB to ask that petitions be filed on behalf of minors in the
County Juvenile Court if- SARB determines that available public and private services are insufficient or
inappropriate to correct the insubordination or habitual truancy of a minor
 The minor does not follow SARB's directions or use the services provided
 The action of the Juvenile Court will result in the student's improved attendance or
behavior
A student must be in school to learn. In addition, punctuality and good attendance are
attributes that lead to successful performance in all walks of life. The Natomas Unified
School District will follow these procedures to ensure that attendance and punctuality are
encouraged on all of its campuses.
 The office staff or classroom teacher will verify each student absence.
 On the third unexcused absence or tardy of 30 minutes or more (or combination of
tardy and absence) a "notification of truancy" letter will be sent to the parent/guardian.
 On the fourth unexcused absence or tardy of 30 minutes or more (or combination), a
second "notification of truancy" letter will be sent. A site level SARB meeting will be
scheduled when reasonable.
 On the fifth unexcused absence or tardy of 30 minutes or more (or combination),
another "notice of truancy" letter will be sent. A District-level School Attendance
Review Board meeting will be scheduled.
 If the contract of the District S.A.R.B. meeting is not upheld, the case will be referred to
the North Area School Attendance Review Board.

play structure, shooting baskets, riding skateboards, etc. Students should also
not be allowed to “cluster” away from their line. Students should go directly
to where their line is.
End-of-Recess Procedure
The bell (or horn) serves as the FREEZE signal. Then:
*
All students should FREEZE where they are.
*
Yard duty folk should make sure that students are safe and still.
The WHISTLE then serves as the RETURN EQUIPMENT/WALK TO LINE signal.
*
Students should WALK the equipment to the appropriate tub and SET
the ball in the tub.

Tetherball Rules
1. There is a line that divides the court in half. Each player must stay in his or her own half
of the court the whole time. Stepping on or crossing the line is a foul.
2. The two players decide who serves. The other gets to decide which side and which way
they are hitting.
3. The server starts the game by striking the ball with their hand or fist in the direction that
was chosen. The server cannot hit it again during that serve until their opponent has
touched the ball.
4. The server may continue to strike the ball after the first swing, and his or her opponent
tries to hit the ball in the opposite direction, both trying to wind the ball completely
around the pole.
5. The player who does this wins the game. The next challenger coming in has their choice
of serving or choosing the side and which direction they are hitting.
Fouls that put a player OUT:
1. Hitting the ball with any part of the body other than the hands or forearms
2. Stopping continuous play by holding, catching, or blocking the ball directly in front of
the opponent with his or her hand
3. Touching the pole with any part of your body
4. Hitting the rope with your forearm or hands
5. Stepping into your opponents court or on the line
6. Double hitting in your court area
7. Throwing the ball
The game stops when a foul is committed. Show good sportsmanship and honesty by
stopping when you know you have committed a foul. Don’t wait for your opponent to call
you on it. Stop the swing of the ball immediately and go to the end of the waiting line.

Wall Ball Rules
2 or 3 players
The game starts by the first person in line serving the ball by first bouncing it on the blacktop
and then hitting the wall.
In turn, each player takes turns hitting the ball on the blacktop and against the wall after it has
bounced once on the blacktop after coming off the wall. (One hit, one bounce) The next
person in line is the judge.
Children are OUT if:
1.
The ball hits the blacktop twice before the opposite player has a
chance to hit the ball.
2.
When a player hits the ball and it does not reach the wall.
3.
If the ball misses the wall by going over or to the side of the
wall. (The person who hit it must get it.)
4.
The ball lands outside of the playing line on the first bounce.
5.
If a player cannot reach the ball because of interference by the
children in line it is a play over. If a player cannot reach the
ball because of interference of the opposing player the
opposing player is out.
Consequences for Breaking Rules

Bicycle Rules

Because of the amount of traffic in and around the school and the high level of
judgment and skill required to operate a bicycle safely...we recommend that students
in grades K, 1, 2 NOT ride their bicycles to school.

Students who do ride their bicycle to school are expected to lock their bicycles to one
of the school racks with a suitable cable or chain and lock. Lock the bicycle through the
frame and at least one wheel to stop someone from simply removing a locked wheel
and taking the bicycle.

All bicycles MUST BE PARKED in the bicycle area. The only time a student should be
near the bicycle parking area is when he/she is parking or removing his/her own
bicycle. Students riding bicycles to school MUST obey regular traffic rules or the
privilege of bringing a bicycle to the school may be revoked.

ALL BIKE RIDERS SHOULD ENTER AND EXIT THROUGH THE DRIVEWAY CLOSEST TO THE
BIKE RACK AREA. Students must walk their bikes when reaching the school sidewalks or
playground.

California State Law requires that all persons under 18 wear a bicycle helmet whenever
riding a bike. Please put your name on your helmet. If you do not have a helmet, see
the principal.
