SCREENING
DEFINITION
“A SCREEN is LEGAL action by a player
(usually offense) who, without
causing contact, delays or prevents
an opponent from reaching a desired
position.”

HOW DO YOU ESTABLISH A LEGAL
SCREENING POSITION
The Screener May Face Any Direction
Time & Distance Are Relevant
The Screener Must Be Stationary
(except when both are moving in the same path & the same direction)

The Screener Must Stay Within Their
Vertical Plane With A Stance Approximately
Shoulder Width Apart

The opponent being SCREENED may be
STATIONARY or MOVING.
Some SCREENS are from the FRONT or
SIDE of the opponent and the
SCREENER can be SEEN by the
opponent. This a VISUALSCREEN.

Some SCREENS are from BEHIND the
opponent and the SCREENER can NOT be
seen by the opponent. This a BLIND
SCREEN.

 When SCREENING an opponent
using a VISUAL SCREEN…the
SCREENER may be as close to the
opponent as he/she desires…SHORT
OF CONTACT.

When SCREENING an opponent using a
BLIND SCREEN…the SCREENER must
allow the opponent ONE NORMAL STEP
BACKWARDS WITHOUT CONTACT.

When SCREENING a MOVING opponent,
the SCREENER must allow the opponent
an opportunity to AVOID contact.
This opportunity is called: TIME &
DISTANCE. (This DISTANCE need NOT
be more than TWO Strides)

When SCREENING an opponent who is
MOVING IN THE SAME PATH AND
DIRECTION as the SCREENER is
moving…the OPPONENT is responsible for
contact if the SCREENER slows up or
stops.

 There is NO SUCH THING as a
MOVING SCREEN FOUL, if there is
NO CONTACT.

 The SCREENER may NOT move to
maintain the SCREEN. In other
words…if the SCREENER IS
MOVING…the SCREEN CANNOT be
legal.(with the one above exception)

 A player who is SCREENED within
his/her VISUAL field is expected to
avoid contact by going around the
SCREENER.

A player who receives a BLIND SCREEN
may make inadvertent contact with the
SCREENER. And…if the opponent is
moving rapidly, the contact may be severe.
In fact…BY RULE…sometimes the most
severe contact in the game is
INCIDENTAL CONTACT.

 Inadvertent contact is to be ruled as
INCIDENTAL CONTACT if the
opponent stops or attempts to stop on
contact and moves around the
SCREEN.

 If the SCREENER has the ball and
the inadvertent contact displaces the
SCREENER…a foul would be called
instead of traveling.

A player may NOT use the arms, hands,
hips or shoulders to force his/her way
through a SCREEN or to hold the
SCREENER and then push the
SCREENER aside in order to maintain a
guarding position on an opponent.
