Storrington Bowling Club June 2016 News Letter Message from the Chairman The season is now in full swing. It was pleasing to welcome a number of new members as well as welcoming back some “older” faces. Matches have been played and competitions started. We have a new competition organised by Peter Smith: Monday evening pairs, which has replaced the triples which ran last season. We have also started a Friday “Club Evening” which is an informal opportunity for members to join in a roll up and stay for a chat and a drink afterwards. The Tuesday and Thursday roll ups which start at 10am are good opportunities for new bowlers to join in with more experienced players. The Ladies Afternoons on Tuesdays are well supported. Hence we have a plethora of bowling opportunities. It would be good if we had more members to take advantage of our Club, so do bring friends and family to our open evenings on 9th, 16th and 23rd June. If these dates are not convenient, do let me know and I would be happy to arrange a separate session for you. The green is bowling well. The Monday morning “green team” of helpers to keep the place looking good is always happy to welcome new faces: just pop in any time between 8 and 9:30. A special Coaching Morning is planned for 10 am on Wednesday 22nd June. All members are invited: ladies & men, new bowlers & league players. One of our coaches, David Ogley, will be running a session using some strategies he has found during his experience as Vice President of Sussex County Bowls. The aim is to reinforce skills and develop new practising techniques. There will be something for everyone so do come along. Some of the highest standard of bowling in Sussex will be at our club when we host three Area Cup matches on 24th June, 1st July and 23rd August. Finally, our website is working well: do have a look if you have not yet done so. John Rimmer Chairman Mens Captain's Report First of all I would like to welcome all of our new 2016 members. Thank you for joining our club and I hope you are enjoying your time with us. Our first West Sussex Bowls League match of the 2016 campaign saw us come away from Witterings with a very commendable victory. Results have gone pear-shaped since then and we lost our next three league matches! We sit mid table in the league but have played more matches than most so must expect to slide down a little. Confidence is high despite the losses and the return from holiday of more of our seasoned campaigners will help our cause. I hope you have an enjoyable summer season. Geoff Page Ladies Captain’s Report Our leagues are progessing well. In the B.M.L. (Brooks Motor League), we are currently top having won all 3 games. In the C&M, (Cups and Medals League), we have lost all 6 matches played so far. We have won 1 rink; drawn 1 rink; and lost 6 by small margins. Ladies who have never bowled in leagues before have played in these fixtures. From the onset, our aim was to bowl for league experience and social networking in the bowling community. We are discovering that this league level is not beyond our reach. We feel confident about the future. We have 4 new bowlers. All have joined from other clubs and are proving to be a good friends and a great asset in the leagues too. As from today, when matches preclude us using Tuesdays for Ladies' Afternoon, we will use 2-3 rinks Wednesdays instead, fixture list permitting. This will apply to Tues.:June14th; July 26th; Aug.23rd and Sept.20th. Many Thanks to everyone for their continued friendship and support. Joy Newman. House Rep. New Kitchen at the club. We now have new doors and worktops and some changes in where things are stored. Please use the new storage as shown on the labels and also note the new recycling facility provided – recycling products only please. Also the tea urn was left on and ceased working in mid-May. It probably boiled dry and burnt out the heating element. However the new tea urn purchased last week was also left on and fortunately found by member calling in later that day and turned off. The new one does have automatic boil dry prevention and overheat cut-out but even so it MUST be emptied and turned off at the wall when finished with. The cost to the club is significant for replacement of items that are misused. PLEASE treat the club equipment as you would your own. I would like to give my thanks to a number of members who assisted in updating club premises and equipment during the winter months. Without such help it would be impossible to maintain the club properly. THANKS VERY MUCH. Bob Manning Competitions The competition draws are now up on the respective notice boards. Please arrange your matches by the dates shown as soon as possible and book your rink by entering the match in the club diary which is in the main club room. Note the number of matches allowed as shown on the front of the diary. Although the dress code has been relaxed over recent years it was agreed at a recent AGM that white top and grey trousers/skirts would still apply to competitions. This includes the markers. The new Monday evening pairs competition is a competition but the Friday evening is classed as a roll up and as such you may play in ‘mufti’ Dates for your diary Triples Open The 10th of July is shown in the fixture list as the Storrington Open triples day. For the particular attention of the newer members this is an annual event held by us when we invite 22 clubs from around the county and the finalists of our own men’s triples tournament to participate. They pay an entry fee of £24 per triple which includes tea or coffee on arrival, lunch and afternoon tea. And of course there is prize money amounting to £330 shared between the first four winning triples Spectators are welcome and may order a lunch £5 per head if they so wish. The green is obviously closed to members on this particular day but do come along and see how well we do things at Storrington. The Finals will take place at approx. 4/4.30pm. Pauline Bain Competition secretary BAR-B-Q Another date to make a note of is Saturday 30th July, weather permitting, the date of our annual BAR-B-Q. Watch the notice board for further details.
