A Whole New Game: Sports & Games in Art March 24 – May 3, 2014 How are sports and games interpreted by contemporary artists? Michael Ivins, the official photographer of the Boston Red Sox, and painter Tom Glover, pay tribute to New England’s favorite team and its iconic setting, Fenway Park. Cheryl Hochberg imagines a rugby game with a wild twist. New Craft Artists in Action, Susan Maffei and Elizabeth Morisette bring a handcrafted aesthetic to the basketball court, the playing field, and the poker game. Stephen Capogna’s gold paintings monumentalize a very small object. Ken Morgan’s prints capture the strange and colorful sideshows of the traveling Tom Glover, Pesky Pole circus. Sarah Petite’s encaustic paintings take inspiration from game theory and board games. The exhibition includes material on PEA’s own sports history from the Academy archives. Sarah Petite, Chaturanga 1 A Whole New Game is supported in part by the Lowenstein Fund, established to support works of art and other cultural programs at the Academy; and the Richard Ward Day Fund, designed to support innovative student and faculty projects.
