It*s time for the first edition of the Cedar Chest

CEDAR CHEST - FALL 2015
HELLO THERE
It’s time for the first edition of the Cedar Chest. Everyone is back at
school and camp is being prepared for the off-season. We are busy
making plans for the 2016 season, which will be our 63rd summer!
We would very much like to hear from you during the year. Not only do
we enjoy hearing from you but we also like to print your news in the
Cedar Chest. It is a great way to let all your camp friends know what
you are doing. As well as sharing news, we also like to print any
articles and stories you have written and would like to have in the
Cedar Chest so if you have something to contribute, just send it to us.
We look forward to hearing from you.

FATHER & SON WEEKEND
Our annual Father & Sons Weekend was a great success. We
enjoyed a wonderful weekend with over 70 campers sharing Camp
with their dads. The weather was beautiful all weekend long, and the
fathers and sons enjoyed everything from hocker games to campfire to
a fantastic lobster dinner. It was a great weekend had by all!

BACK TO SCHOOL
(Re-printed from previous editions)
The beginning of school is often the most important time of the year,
because it is during this time that the foundation is prepared for the
entire year.
Try hard to pay close attention to everything that is said in class, and
keep up to date on all of your assignments. Don't let yourself fall
behind in any subject, and try to do a little extra work if you have time.
Reading is very basic and very important for all schoolwork. Make an
effort to do some reading every day, and try to improve your
vocabulary, not just by memorizing words, but by reading good books
and learning new words from them. Read for school, and read for
pure enjoyment. That is a great way to learn.
There is a vast difference between homework and studying, and it is
important to learn the difference. Homework is usually some daily
assignment that can often be done in school during study periods or
can be done at home. It is based on current work being learned.
Studying, however, is never finished. Studying is that extra effort
shown by reviewing and remembering. Try to develop good study
habits. Study hard and we hope you all have a great year in school.
CEDAR IN THE COMMUNITY
After camp ended, we hosted a camp for inner city boys and girls from
Hartford, CT. Many of these campers had never traveled outside of
the city and they had a great four days playing around at Cedar. They
had a carnival, swam in the lake, took boat rides, played gaga and
enjoyed a number of team building activities. A group of staff members
stayed to help with the program and we thank them all for their hard
work. It is a great thing to be able to offer this program, and we
appreciate all the support we have had through the years from our
Cedar community.

SPORTS TRIVIA
1.
Philip Rivers set multiple Chargers records in their week 6
loss to Green Bay, but his 43 completions in that game tied
him for 2nd place on the NFL’s all-time single-game list. Who
did he tie and who are they both behind?
2.
Toronto Blue Jays star Jose Bautista became only the
second player in MLB history to reach base three times on
his birthday, during the MLB postseason. Who did it first?
3.
Kansas City Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar led off in the
bottom half of the first inning of the World Series with an
inside the park homerun. Has such a rare feat every
happened in the fall classic before 2015?

JEFF HACKER
Jeff is being inducted into the Connecticut Lacrosse Hall of fame on
November 21, 2015. Jeff is very appreciative of all the support and
nominations that came from camp families. It is a true honor, and one
that would not be possible without your support.

BOB’S NOTEBOOK

NATURE UPDATE
Bob tells us that they have seen some deer a lot of turkeys around
camp. The night sky is even more amazing when all the lights at camp
are off. Jeff went up to camp a few weeks ago, and while it was a little
scary being the only one on camp, it was also really fun! The birds
really come back in bug numbers in the fall, and they think that the
grass seed is for them to eat! We’ve had hawks, herons and lots of
songbirds make their way onto the fields.
We have had a great fall so far in Maine. We have turned all the water
off in all the cabins and drained the pipes so they do not freeze this
winter. We have aerated and reseeded every inch of grass around
camp, putting extra around the goals of the lacrosse and soccer fields,
near the pitching mounds, and around the front campus. It is already
growing and camp looks so green and beautiful!
The leaves are still coming down and it takes a lot of work to pick them
up and get them off the grass. The docks are in and stacked up on the
beach. They have all been resealed and fixed up for next summer. We
have painted, hammered, raked, washed and picked up all over camp.
It is amazing: no matter how much we pick up, there still seems to be
a ball or something else that appears the next day! We have a good
crew here working to get camp in great shape for next summer. Hope
you are doing well in school and we miss you up here in Maine!

counselor Jason Tanenbaum and his wife, Pam, on the birth of
their daughter!
Lily Reese Tanenbaum was born on October 12, 2015.
CAMP CHAMPIONS CELEBRATION
We are proud to be a part of the fifth annual “Camp Champions
Celebration,” which will take place November 13, 2015 at Fenway
Park. The event helps raise money so that at-risk youth can enjoy the
same summer camp experience we’re fortunate enough to enjoy yearafter-year. Jeff helps chair the event as an ACA board member, and a
number of Cedarites past and present, alumni and parents, have lent
a hand as donators and organizers, while others will be joining us as
guests; the Cedar Community alone has donated over $10,000 to the
event! We hope this year’s event will be an even bigger success than
last year, and we are so proud that Cedar and our extended camp
family continues to help lead the way in community service activities!

SPORTS TRIVIA ANSWERS
1.
Rivers tied Rich Gannon of the 2002 Oakland Raiders for
second; however, both are two completions short of Drew
Bledsoe’s record set with the 1994 New England Patriots.
2.
Keith Hernandez was the first to complete this birthday
success, way back in 1982, for the St. Louis Cardinals.
3.
Not only has it happened, but this was the twelfth time, and
the second time it has happened to the leadoff hitter in the
first inning! The last time? Patsy Dougherty of the Boston
Red Sox led off the World Series with an inside the park
homerun…in 1903…in the second World world series ever!

A FAMILY AFFAIR
When former camper Jacob Cohen came to visit, he was welcomed by
both his camp little brother, Sam Wiener, and his camp big brother,
Aaron Dannenbaum. That makes Aaron Sam’s grand big brother!

A VERY SPECIAL CONGRATULATIONS TO SAMMY & ROBBIE
As many of you know, Samantha Wolf-Mcleod & Robbie Mcleod
