Strategies to teach reading in the primary setting
Learning event overview:
This two day course is designed to deepen participants’ knowledge and understanding
of effective teaching strategies to support students’ literacy achievement. The course
will build the capacity of primary teachers to embed a range of evidence-based
practices into their teaching and learning programs for the purpose of explicitly teaching
reading. To successfully complete the course, participants are required to complete a
professional reading, trial a comprehension strategy and a teaching idea. Participants
will then share their learning from the deliverable on day two of the course.
Learning event outcomes
Participants will deepen their understanding of:
 strategies to teach comprehension, including the Super 6
 strategies to teach vocabulary knowledge, including the Fabulous 4
 fluency and text navigation
 inferring meaning from texts
 visual literacy
 modelled, guided and independent reading routines.

QTC Registered PD
addressing 2.5.2 and
6.2.2 from the
Australian Professional
Standards for Teachers
towards maintaining at
Proficient Teacher
Accreditation in NSW.
