Petition: Lord, help me to become a saint by denying

1. The Purgative Way: In the Gospel Christ presents
three ways to Christian perfection: “If anyone wants to
become my follower, let him deny himself and take up
his cross and follow me.” The first step, self-denial, is
called “the purgative way” by some spiritual mystics.
Have you ever noticed that in order to advance, a time of
purging is necessary? Champion football teams have to
work hard during the hot August two-times-a-day
practices. The same could be said for our striving for
holiness; we must be purged and purified in many ways.
It is essential that we hate sin and avoid it at all cost by
fighting temptation. Our sentiments, passions, memory
and imagination must be placed under the rule of our
faith, intellect and will. Beginning a prayer life requires
effort, fight and constancy. By embracing the cross of
the purification process we can advance in holiness.

2. The Illuminative Way: A second step in the spiritual
life can be summarized as “take up his cross.” A soul in
this step has achieved a certain measure of self-control
over the force of his passions, avoids any grave sins, and
has deep convictions regarding the truths of our faith.
Their present task is to progress in good, strengthening
themselves especially in charity. They seek to adorn
themselves with Christ’s virtues and to make Christ the
center of their thoughts, affections and actions. These
souls could be compared to an experienced mother who
is raising the youngest of her children or an athlete who
has the fundamentals down and is playing at peak
performance. How happy and balanced our lives are
when we arrive to this level in our spiritual life. Christ
invites us to this level of friendship with him; all we
have to do is say yes, work hard and trust in God’s
grace.
3. The Unitive Way: The third step in the spiritual life,
the unitive way, can be described by Christ’s words:
“Follow me.” Once we go through the purification of our
own body and soul and are steeped in the practice of
virtue, we are ready to be among the closest followers of
Christ, the saints! In this level we are detached from
created things, and our primary focus is on the presence
of the Creator who dwells in our hearts. Love of God
becomes the driving force in our life and we can say
with our Lord, “I always do what pleases him” (John

return to school, take time for yourself to read, reflect
and renew your faith through spiritual reading and
prayer. We have a wonderful library and books for sale
so that you can develop a mature Catholic faith. The
best teachers are witnesses. Join one of our scripture
reflection groups so that you can share your love for God
and Church with others with humility and confidence.
Above all, pray that you and your children grow in their
personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the way, the
truth, and the life. Then, church, family and true
friendships will be part of their life and love.
Is your life with Jesus helping you become a more
loving person? The wheel diagram: The Christian life
can be pictured as a wheel. The rim of the wheel
represents the Christian’s daily life. The hub of the
wheel is the source of power and direction for the whole
wheel. It holds the wheel together. The hub of the
Christian life is Christ himself (on the throne, the
center). In order to transmit the power and direction
from the hub to the rim, spokes are needed. Some spokes
in the Christian life are prayer, study, service, and
community. These are means to put our whole life in
contact with Christ, so that he can transform it with his
power and directions.

Adult, Children’s, or (hopefully soon) our Bell Choir,

reason we serve. Our purpose is to bring honor to our
Creator and Savior. We all say we believe this. The time
commitment is minimal. Let’s remember that serving

MESSAGE FROM THE YOUTH MINISTER
I ask you to truly pray for the youth of our parish. Make
it a priority to send them to Youth Group. We are
blessed to be able to have a Youth Ministry here at
SMM; however, we cannot help but be overwhelmed by
all of the distractions of our lives. We must remember
though that it is by slowing down that we win the race.
Our Junior Youth Group meets every Wednesday from
7:30-9PM starting September 14th. Our Junior Youth
Group is for all incoming 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Our
Senior Youth Group will meet every first Sunday of the
month after the 5:30 mass. It will begin at 6:30 with
pizza and will conclude at 8PM. Senior Youth Group
will start on Sept. 18th. At Youth Group, we discuss the
gospel and how to become strong and confident
Catholics. We also talk about the real issues going on in
today’s world and how to rise above the temptations that
surround all of us. Finally, how could I not mention the
games and activities we have at youth group! If you have

HOW COMMITTED ARE YOU TO CHRIST?
Did you know that there are 8,760 Hours a year? Would
you be willing to spend just 33 of these hours to help
pass on our Catholic Faith to others? It comes down to
this’ “short hours - Eternal Rewards!” Faith is a gift
given by God to a human being. But Faith is also a
desire to be nurtured. God gives His gift of Faith as a
Sower of his seed and it takes the loving attention and
care of many, like you, to nurture the seed. If it is to
grow, Faith must be shared with conviction, joy, love,
enthusiasm and hope.
Please consider this wonderful and much needed work.
We are looking for good practicing Catholics who would
like to be a catechist (one t teach the faith), assistant (one
who helps the primary teacher), and couples who would
like to “team teach” a class. Team teaching could
include spouses, two friends, college students etc. We
would be happy to have high school students who need
to do service throughout the year to be assistants in our

SMM HEALING AND HOPE MINISTRIES
GO HAND IN HAND
As the Healing Ministry gears up to go out and serve the
Lord, I can’t tell you enough what an enormous act of
love and comfort the HOPE meals bring into these
families who are so starved in mind and spirit. Theses
families are often in a crisis and hanging on by an
emotional, spiritual and sometimes literally, a physical
thread. When our parish family offers a lifeline of meals
and hugs, Jesus shine through and heals their gaping
sorrows. So, though the houses are beautiful and the
landscapes are lovely, hearts are breaking and your
selfless gifts of meals and support are anointing acts of
healing. What you will do this year on the HOPE team
will bring families closer to Jesus. Thank you for your

LAUGH WITH THE PASTOR
An old pastor lay dying. He sent a message for an
Internal Revenue Service agent and his lawyer to come
to the hospital. When they arrived, they were ushered up
to his room. As they entered the room, the pastor held
out his hands and motioned for them to sit on each side
of the bed. The pastor grasped their hands, sighed
contentedly, smiled and stared at the ceiling. For a time,
no one said anything.
Both the IRS agent and lawyer were touched and
flattered that the old man would ask them to be with him
during his final moments. They were also puzzled
because the pastor had never given any indication that he
particularly liked either one of them. Finally, the Lawyer
asked, “Pastor, why did you ask the two of us to come
here?” The old pastor mustered all his strength and then
said weakly, “Jesus died between two thieves and that’s
how I’d like to go.”
BETHESDA PROJECT
Labor Day already!!! A special thanks to those of you
who helped the folks at Bethesda through the summer.
The needs were greater than ever because the
contributions were way down. The powerful message of
everyone lighting one little candle helped to get through

Message from Fr Chiriaco’s Family For the past 3
years Team C has participated in the Phila Memory
Walk. Each year my brother-in-law was with us at the
Walk supporting us as we walked hoping for a cure.
Sadly, this year he will be with us in our hearts as we
walk in his memory. He suffered from a disease called
Lewy Bodies, similar to Alzheimer’s in some ways but
vastly different in others. This year the goal of Team C
is to raise awareness for Lewy Bodies. Our hope is that
someday a cure will be found for this terrible disease.
Team C will again participate in the Memory Walk on
September 19th in Phila, but we ask that your support and
donations be given to the Lewy Bodies Assoc. We hope
that by raising money & awareness for Lewy Bodies in
his name we can help someone else who is fighting this
disease. Please make a donation by visiting my First

REGISTRATION FOR ALL FAMILIES
We invite all people to register in the SMM Offices. If
you come to church every week, but have not filled out a
registration form, you are not registered. You will need
to fill out a registration form, which can be obtained at
the offices or from one of the priests. Registration helps
us to serve you when issuing letters in connection with
sponsorship of Baptism, Confirmation or Matrimony.
Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage are all sacraments
which are taken very seriously. In order for you to
receive a sacrament or play a role in someone else’s
reception of a sacrament, you will need to be an active
parishioner. When someone is asked to be a godparent or
to sponsor someone’s Confirmation, a Letter of
Eligibility is required from our Parish testifying that the
godparent or sponsor is an active parishioner. A Letter of
Eligibility is asking the priest to sign and acknowledge
that the person is at least 16 years of age, confirmed,
celebrating the sacraments regularly, and, if married,
married in the Catholic Church. This person must be
registered and an active member of the parish. If you
move, we would appreciate a call to the Offices so your
records will be up to date.
