Welcome to the city from Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle. Melburnians enjoy the sights and sounds of their city, rain
or shine, which is why we have packed a calendar of events and attractions this winter including the
Docklands Firelight Festival. Our cosy cafes, fine dining and diverse fashion scene are the envy of the nation

Docklands Firelight Festival
Event dates: 30 June to 2 July
Location: NewQuay Promenade
This winter we introduce a festival of creativity, fire and food. Local artist Christian Patton will create three
large sculptures to be ceremoniously set alight each night, while choreographed fireworks, fire drums and an
array of barbecue food will add to the exciting atmosphere. Don’t miss the nightly fireworks and sculpture
burnings on the water.
Bug Lab: Little Bugs, Super Powers

Location: Melbourne museum
An immersive exhibition by the wizards behind the costumes and practical effects featured in The Lord of the
Rings, King Kong and Avatar. Uncover the adaptive genius of bugs, which have evolved to have superpower
abilities, including camouflage, mind control, super speed, swarm intelligence and deadly venom. Don’t miss
marvelling at the large-scale bugs, then head to the neighbouring exhibition Bugs Alive! to get up close with
the real thing.

Truffle Melbourne Festival

Ned Kelly Tour

Location: State Library Victoria
Ned Kelly – hero or villain? Decide for yourself as you examine Kelly’s armour, read his impassioned
statement to the press and sift through photographs from his final siege. Don’t miss a visit to the Red Rotunda
where works of Australian masters like Frederick McCubbin are on display.
Winter Wonderland Village

A whimsical family amusement park featuring snow play, tea cup rides and laughing clowns will delight
visitors. Classic sweet treats including fairy floss and caramel corn add to the fun and excitement of the

Fast Fashion – The Dark Side of Fashion

How is it possible that fashionable clothing items are so cheap? This exhibition deals with mass consumption,
economic effects and ecological issues relating to the fashion industry and fast-changing fashion trends. Don’t

Nite Art 2017
Event date: 27 July
Location: 25 galleries across the city
Art Navigators will guide you through the night to discover the work of over 50 artists through an
interconnected network of galleries, museums, artist-run spaces, laneways and exclusive areas that are
normally off limits. Don’t miss US artist Jordan Eagles and his world renowned blood projection work
‘Illuminations’.
Wrecking Ball by Action Hero
Event dates: 31 May to 3 June
Location: Arts House, North Melbourne
A funny, surreal and unsettling new play from Bristol’s performance mavericks, Action Hero. It questions who
is really in control and studies how subtle abuses of power shape our relationships – with art, language and
with each other. Don’t miss a post-show debrief at the nearby North Melbourne Hotel.
River Rink

Location: Federation Square
Get your skates on and take a spin on Fed Square’s very own ice skating rink. Bring the family or round up
some friends and enjoy warming wintry food and drink, while taking in the picturesque Yarra River and the city

Van Gogh and the Seasons

Explore Van Gogh’s profound connection to the seasons through nearly 50 paintings and drawings – the

Mozart Festival

Celebrate the life and legacy of one of the world’s best known and loved composers. Experience Mozart’s
greatest compositions and lesser known gems, brought to life by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with the

enchanting audiences for over four decades. Take an extraordinary journey behind the scenes and into the

Circus Oz: Model Citizen

Location: The Big Top, Birrarung Marr
A surreal and breathtaking blend of risk and improbable physical feats with no shortage of theatricality,
choreography and absurdity. The all-human ensemble brings new life to unexpected circus props and

The Finders Keepers

A truly unique retail event featuring over 250 local independent designers, artists and makers. With live music,

My Fair Lady

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady returns, directed by Julie Andrews. Opera

Old Melbourne Gaol – Hangman’s Tour
Location: 377 Russell Street
Between 1842 and its closure in 1929, the Old Melbourne Gaol was the scene of 133 hangings including
Australia’s most infamous citizen, the bushranger Ned Kelly. Let a hangman guide you around the gaol after

Common Man

Lulu Café and Gallery
