ASSISTANTSHIP IN INSTRUCTION
GUIDELINES FOR COMBINATION OF SUPPORT WITH UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIPS OR ASSISTANTSHIPS IN RESEARCH
2015-16
In general, when a student receives an Assistantship in Instruction (AI) appointment for a given term, any other support from the University is adjusted
accordingly to reflect the actual commitment to the AI and the other funding source(s). The tables below show pro-rated stipend amounts for an AI combined
with a University Fellowship or an Assistantship in Research. The tables assume the following University award rates for 2015-16:

ASSISTANTSHIP IN INSTRUCTION COMBINED WITH UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP
When a student who is funded by a University Fellowship is appointed as an Assistantship in Instruction (AI), their University Fellowship stipend amount is prorated accordingly depending on the AI appointment. The stipend for an AI, paid as salary, is higher than the University Fellowship stipend, thus the student will
see a slight gross increase in stipend when they receive an AI appointment, as shown in the pro-rated stipend amounts below.

ASSISTANTSHIP IN INSTRUCTION COMBINED WITH ASSISTANTSHIP IN RESEARCH (AR)
If a student holds both an AI and an AR in any term, the student’s financial support reflects the student’s actual commitment to the AI and the AR. As the table
below indicates, a full AI appointment is a 6 hour AI appointment that provides for 100% of the student’s financial support for the term, with no AR. For AI
appointments that are less than 100% for a term and are coupled with AR support for the student’s remaining support, the table below provides the pro-rated
stipend amounts for the various AI% and AR % combinations.

AI TUITION CONTRIBUTION FOR DCE STUDENTS
Per Graduate School policy, a student enrolled in DCE status who has an AI appointment of a minimum of 2 hours will receive a tuition grant for the full DCE
tuition and fees amount, determined on a per term basis.
CALCULATION OF ESTIMATED WORK HOURS FOR AI APPOINTMENTS
A graduate student holding a full 6-hour appointment in a semester is expected to be working 20 hours per week through some combination of classroom
and/or laboratory time, grading, and preparation; fractional AI appointments are made when the work load is less than 20 hours for the AI assignment. The
conversion of fractional and full AI appointments to estimated work hours is provided in the table below. Please note that a full AI is considered full-time
employment for a Graduate Student in that term.
