The Services
The Rural Industries R&D Corporation is seeking Quotations for a Code of Practice for the ginger
industry.
Background
This project will develop a code of practice for the Australian ginger industry to promote
best practice for the ginger industry and provide a standard for growers to use as a
benchmark for:


Objectives
production practices from harvest to retail shelf
packaging and handling to reduce yeast and mould which will increase shelf-life
for both new and old ginger.
1. Undertake a desktop review of all the appropriate production information to
identify best-practice handing and packing of new season and old season
ginger.
2. Provide growers best practice information for handling and chain management
post-harvest to ensure fresh ginger product is provided to the market with an
improved shelf-life. This will include information about:
a. Handling techniques to reduce yeast and mould.
b. Styles of long-life packaging for new season ginger and old season
ginger.
c. Carton sizes for new season ginger and old season ginger.
3. Create a flow chart with wholesalers & retailers to improve the shelf-life of
ginger at different times of the year. This will require:
a. A trial with 1 wholesaler and approximately 10 retailers of various
combinations of carton size for new season and old season ginger to
minimise loss of product over a whole year.
b. Identification of the temperature required on shelf at different time of the
year in relation to age and/or morphology of new season and old season
ginger.
Standards and Best Practice
Advice must be provided in MS Word format or as agreed by RIRDC.
