Learning Grids 15MLF SM 5th November 2014 What is a Learning Gird? • A 6x6 grid, created by you, by students or collaboratively • Each cell contains a piece of information, an idea or a visual stimulus related to your curriculum area • Students roll dice (first number = horizontal axis, second number = vertical access) to select and respond to cells Literary Terminology Learning Grid War Poetry Learning Grid King Lear Learning Grid Shared Online What can Learning Girds be Used for? • Generating ideas (e.g. features to include in a story or a speaking task) • Practising a skill (e.g. equations to complete) • Making links (between any different components of a topic) • Varying exam preparation activities (e.g. cells for different concepts, for exam questions, for marking completed questions) • Creating revision concept maps (connecting the contents of each cell as it is rolled) Why use Learning Grids? • Rolling the dice to generate new tasks allows students to work independently and at their own pace: good for generating ‘flow’ • Good activity for paired work, which allows students to collaborate and peer-teach • Elements of randomness and challenge are highly motivational • By creating their own learning grids, students synthesise and prioritise knowledge about a topic • Relatively easy to differentiate (change a small number of cells, deal with one cell or connect two or more, work your way across the grid rather than select at random) For More Information
