Western Kentucky University Intramural-Recreational Sports Men’s & Women’s Ultimate Wall Hoops Rules & Regulations Updated: 1-10-2017 1. Teams Each team consists of 3 players and is limited to a total of 6 players. The minimum number of players needed to play is 2. Substitutions o Substitutions will only be made in between quarters and or during a timeout. 2. Court and Equipment Games will be played: i. in Preston Center Racquetball courts ii. with a Walleyball iii. With two cardboard trash boxes with taped arcs around each box 3. Player Uniforms Players may not wear jewelry of any kind. All players must wear NON-Marking athletic shoes An approved headband is the ONLY type of head gear that is permissible to wear. All players must be in appropriate athletic wear: No jeans, boots, nonathletic shoes, or hats/non-approved head gear. All scrimmage vests MUST be worn with a shirt underneath. All members must be dressed in same/similar uniforms with at least a 4” number on the back of each uniform shirt. If one player on a team does not have a uniformed shirt, the whole team will have to wear the scrimmage vests supplied by the intramural department. All players are required to properly wear their shirts and shorts at all times. At no point should underwear or sports bras be showing. (Compression short/spandex will not be deemed as underwear.) The hole in cutoff shirts should be no more than 4 inches below the armpit 4. Starting the game Players will play rock paper scissors or have official do odd or even to determine who gets ball first and which side teams will attack and defend. To start, offense will go to their own arc and pass the ball in to start. Defense must be inside or behind the 2 point lines to start the game and on all resets. Offense, at no time, can shoot the ball from their own arc and cannot hold the ball for longer than 5 seconds in arc at any point in the game Once the ball is thrown out of arc it is considered in play and the game will start. 5. Timing A game consists of 4 quarters. o Each quarter will be 3 minutes in length. Teams will switch goals after each quarter o There will be a 3 minute halftime. o The clock will run continuously for the duration of the quarters. o The clock will stop for official and team time-outs. Each team will have two time-outs per game. First Overtime Period o The first overtime will be a 1 minute period with rock paper scissors determining who has first possession. Teams will protect the same goals as they did in the second half. o No Time-outs for the overtime period Second Overtime Period o Will be a sudden death first on to score wins. 6. Violations Illegal pass- a pass to yourself that does not go in a forward direction. i. Passes to yourself have to be off a wall, in a forward direction. Dribbling- Players may not dribble the ball, if ball is dribbled it will result in a turnover. Traveling- Players may not take more than one step when they have the ball. They may only move the ball with a legal pass to themselves off the wall in a forward direction or a pass to a teammate in any direction. 5 second count- If a player is closely guarded on a 5 second stall count the ball is then turned over. The defense is in charge of counting, a count will start over after a legal pass by the offense. This count MUST be counter aloud. Kick ball violation- If defense uses foot to alter/block a pass it is a violation and offense will reset that possession On all Illegal passes, dribbling and traveling violations, and 5 second count, the ball will be rewarded to the defense at the spot of the turnover. 7. Goal Arc Defensive Goal Arc Violation- Defense may only go in the goal arc on 2 occasions i. To retrieve a ball on a missed shot/ blocked shot or loose ball ii. May land in arc after blocking opponents shot. Player must start from outside of the arc then may land in arc after the attempted block shot iii. Defense may not cut across the goal arc to get in defensive position iv. Defense may go in the arc to block shot however must immediately get out of crease if offense retains possession of ball. Defender may not interfere with the shot inside of the arc and must not walk straight towards the offense to get back into defensive position. The Defender must step out of the way of the offense, outside the goal arc, and then reestablish guarding position. v. If the defense defends a shot while already inside the arc it will be defensive interference and offense will be awarded the point(s) Offensive Goal Arci. Offense may not go into opponent’s arc. They may go into their own crease on offense to retrieve ball or pass it back to a teammate. ii. If offense steps in the crease to score a goal/before a goal is scored the ball will be turned over to the defending team. iii. Offense cannot cut across the arc to get open on offense. Team must go on outside of arc, if offense cuts through arc they will then turn the ball over to the defense iv. The ONLY time offense can ever go into the defensive goal arc is after a goal has been scored and momentum carries one foot into the arc. The basket has to already be scored before the feet touch the floor. If both feet land inside the arc the basket will be nullified no matter if the basket is scored before landing in the arc. 8. Fouls Games will be self-officiated with an official up top to moderate and help the flow of the game and to make any decisions on controversial plays Game is to be played with contact rules from basketball with 2 exceptions i. No picks/ screens are allowed ii. No boxing out/ pinning people to the walls or corners iii. Must allow offense space and not use walls as an advantage on a pass, shot or running down the court by pushing opponent into it. If a foul is called by the offense or defense, the play is to be reset i. Ball goes to mid line and defense retreats to their side beyond the 2 point box. ii. The ball is dead up top and the play continues on a pass either to a teammate or off wall to yourself iii. There may be quick starts after violations or fouls, meaning you do not have to wait to reset fully if going from defense to offense after a violations If foul occurs on the last play of the quarter meaning no time is remaining the player may take a penalty shot from the mid line with no contest. Will be a two point shot. Technical fouls i. A player will not use unsportsmanlike tactics, such as: (a) disrespectfully addressing or contacting an official (b) using profanity no matter who it is directed toward (Even one’s self or a teammate) (c) baiting an opponent or obstructing his/her vision by waving hands near his/her eyes or (d) climbing on a teammate to secure greater height to handle the ball (e) objecting with an official's decision by rising from the bench or using gestures (f) inciting undesirable crowd reaction (g) entering the court unless by permission of an official to attend to an injured player (h) failing to replace a disqualified player in 30 seconds when a substitute is available (I) any other situations deemed appropriate by the officials. 9. Scoring Legal shot- When a player shoots walleyball from outside of arc area into the cardboard trash can Points will be awarded by 1’s and 2’s After a missed shot, the ball will become dead for the offense. Only the defense will be allowed to rebound the ball. i. Exception: If the defense blocks the shot, the ball will become live for everyone. 1 Point shot i. Any legal shot made that is on the opponents side of the 2 point box 2 Point shot i. Any legal shot made inside the 2 point box on the court (includes the mid-line and 2 other lines) 10. Miscellaneous Jump Ball i. Occurs when the offense and defense have simultaneous hold on the ball without committing a foul ii. When this happens possessions should be given to the team that did not win the opening rock paper scissors game iii. If multiple jump balls happen possession is given to the team that did not get it the previous jump ball 11.Blood Rule If and when an official observes that a player is bleeding, has an open wound, or has any amount of blood on his or her uniform, the player must leave the game. (In an instance when a substitute is not available, the official may allow time for the player to receive medical attention, but the time may not be excessive in the judgment of the official.) If a substitute is available, the player must leave and may not re-enter until after the clock has run and a substitution opportunity occurs. The injured player is not to return until the bleeding has stopped, the open wound is covered, and bloody uniform is changed.
